Yes, I had those quarter-million trees in mind as well. Developers tend to make really lousy arborists.

Goes without saying that different trees attain different heights and shapes upon maturity. Eight columnars are obviously a different proposition than eight open-headed or pyramidal varieties.

And of course, these measures are relative to the lifespan of a tree. A gingko can live 1,000 years, a maple or oak might live 200-400 years, a pine half that, a locust half that again, and a flowering pear a quarter of that yet again.

I'd rather see this development go forward, with the 8 (probably saplings) be planted. I don't care if we're losing one mature tree. I care that in 20 years that corner will have a better street tree line than it does now.

That's the thing about trees, you know.

They grow.

Some guy was taking pictures of what I thought was my house on Augusta a few houses down from the infill site, so I went outside and confronted him and asked him what he was doing. Turned out he was a surveyor for the Brownstones and was checking the street and spraying lines for something or rather. He told me they would start digging next week on the site, long story short, sorry. So the project is about to commence.

The tree is gone and the foundations are being poured. I would have taken a picture had it not been pouring and also dark. The building looks like it'll just about meet the building to it's left on Augusta with room for trees & a small path/garden between the sidewalk and front door. So far so good.

Will these be the Brownstones on Augusta or the Graystones on Augusta?
