By a landslide.
Madrid had 28 in the first round, 29 in the second and only 32 I think in the final round. Rio has over 60 votes by the third round.
Madrid's strong showing in the first round is what killed Chicago.

Actually many Chicagoans didn't want the games. The city is currently in deep debt and there have been big cuts to both education and public safety. Everything venue-wise was supposed to be brand new which would have cost them a fortune. Essentially it came down to the bid being for the politicians. I am sure the citizens of Chicago are breathing a collective sigh of relief.

But I am very excited for Rio. It is about time that South America held the Olympics. They should have held them decades ago. But hey, money talks. GO RIO!!!

This is going to be an awesome Olympics, akin to Sydney. I might actually consider going to these Games.

Way to go Rio!

With South Korea likely to get the 2018 Winter Games (They lost to us AND Sochi) A Madrid/Chicago (if they were to bid again) showdown would be tight for 2020 if voting were anything like this round. Although it still makes way more sense for the US to get it as the London games would only be 8 years past.

God, Brazilians are by far one of the sexiest people on Earth! Definitely going to be watching these Olympics. And I'm definitely not trying to be offensive as I love Chicago, but when you saw scenes of the crowd, it was pudgy people wrapped in chilly clothing then you see Rio with the bikinis and tanned bodies. Stark comparisons.

And CNN has a very insightful video on chicago's bid being 'unwinnable'. It goes into the whole thing on equity with no games in South America until now but it also speaks to the arrogance and naivite of US pundits who seemed to have no perspective other than that of the American one - that they couldn't even fathom how people would even vote for someone other than the Chicago bid. (i can't seem to link to it but it's called 'Chicago's bid 'unwinnable''.

I was surprised to see Chicago got knocked out in the first round. I was talking to a guy from Chicago when I was traveling through Spain this past summer and he told me the Chicago Olympics were a done deal. LOL I told him my money was on Rio, I wish I could have seen his face this morning.

|Hopefully they fix their crime problems quick because Rio is by all accounts one the most violent and dangerous cities in the world partially thanks to its lawless slums. I havent been there personally yet but my girlfriend has family and friends in Rio andf has been there dozens of times...shes from Sao Paulo and just came here two years ago.

Crime will be a big issue, and the stories I have heard from her are hard to beleive, and thers lots of them....mind you she calls Vancouver a boring little village where she feels safe anywhere and everywhere.

Also keep in mind Brazil is hosting the 2014 world cup....I dont think a country has ever hosted the two bigest events in the world within two years of each other.

LMAO.

Listen to the CNN anchor's reaction when it was announced that Chicago had been eliminated, it's priceless:
