for those who don't know, the building with 'grapes' on it is the former capitol theatre lobby. the theatre itself extended out and to the right in an 'L' shape. there are a few interior pics circulating - it was spectacular. 2000+ seats. someone passionate about film or theatre [and a million bucks burning a hole in their pocket] would do well to build a neat little theatre on that site. 200 seats would be sufficient...mmmm whatever. anyway, that's what i'd do if i were a millionaire.

how about those guys who were going to build the House of Blues in Hess?? mind you, I think they want to be in Hess.
too bad Aquarius didn't need another theatre....better yet, we missed our chance when we built Hamilton Place.
Imagine if they had put Hamilton Place theatre behind a restored Capitol lobby?? saaaweeet!

i recall reading that there was a huge outcry when hamilton place was proposed. many called for the restoration of our existing theatres - the capitol, the lyric, the palace, the savoy...actually, not sure if that one was still around but you get the idea. the building of hamilton place was a death knell for the old theatres in town.

back then our politicians were fixated on new stuff and destroying the old.
too bad. that fad didn't last long, now the booming cities are the ones with great old downtowns.

Regardless, I think the Old theatres and Hamilton Place can co-exist. Hamilton Place is an amazing venue for classical music, but nothing beets an old time theatre for drama.

thanks for the updates. lookin' good.

here's an example of a building that's not a 'replica' per se, but is sympathetic to the scale and style of the neighbourhood. what the end product will look like is anyone's guess but it'll help downtown just the same.

yah, I am very curious to see what the street level area will look like.

Also any idea what the name chosen for this building is?

Why couldn't the builders have placed the square openings (vents I guess) so they wouldn't interfere with the widow trim. I just don't get it. It ends up making a poor impression.

yes. Like leave it alone!!
It's a gem of a building. I love it just as is.
Once we start getting rid of buildings/signs like that we end up being a boring crap-hole like Mississuaga.
Pagoda is awesome. It's so New York.

I wouldn't know...didn't make it to the Bronx when I was there.
Was in Manhattan the entire time.
Next time you go, check out Greenwich Village, SoHo, Nolita etc.....

^^ Pagoda has an awesome atmosphere and I love eating there! The old lady that runs the whole joint pretty much knows our order we're there so often! haha

I love sitting up there just when it starts to get dark... the view of King/John/Gore Park is awesome while you eat!

That building's lookin good. about 1,000,000% better than the 'kit kat building'! haha
