^He was probably referring to what the original plan was for when Wild Bill was trying to lure the St. Louis Blues. Heck, another season like last year here and the new owners should talk talking to Saskatoon and see if the offer is still on the table.

Good spot for another hotel, how many rooms would that be adding to the city?

It's adding about 140 new rooms, to the current 1500 already downtown.

Maybe there is a chance afterall. That would leave 20 acres to infill.

Sweet. That would be so cool. It doesn't really talk about moving the raillines out though, but just moving the yards would free up some stuff and definitely allow some buffering from the trains and connection to downtown.

I assumed they meant the rails too, as it says 20 acres. I don't think the yards alone are 20 acres, plus it says "one of the largest infill projects in Canada" that must mean more than just the yards. But I could be wrong.

Sure it may have the fan support of such a large region but it's the economic support that matters. A couple hundred thousand loyal fans in the middle of nowhere who wear eight year old rider hats who regularly watch the games on TV have minimal effect on the drawing power of the franchise.

there was some press release about giving a new name to a building in Regina not too long ago..

ah, here it is.

PWGSC: Community Invited to Name New Government of Canada Building

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - July 12, 2006) - The Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services today invited the residents of the Regina area to suggest names for the new Government of Canada building located in downtown Regina.

"I am extremely pleased to launch the process to select a name for the new Government of Canada Building," said Minister Fortier. "This is a unique opportunity to suggest a name that reflects the importance of the building to the people of Regina and southern Saskatchewan."

A Community Liaison Committee, made up of volunteers from the community, local universities and other levels of government, will review the submissions. They will be responsible for recommending one final selection and two alternates to Minister Fortier, who will make the final decision.

"Buildings take on a particular type of presence in the community. I am very pleased that the new Regina Government of Canada Building will be given a name that resonates with citizens and reflects the history and diversity of the community," added Minister Fortier.

Regina and area citizens are asked to submit their suggestions for a building name within the next month. The deadline for submission is July 27, 2006 and the final decision will be announced later this summer or early fall. More details are available in the "News and Features" section of the PWGSC Internet site at www.pwgsc.gc.ca.

The new Government of Canada building, formerly known as "The Galleria," is located at 1783 Hamilton Street in downtown Regina. Designed to use water and energy more efficiently, the ten-story building is being renovated by PWGSC using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ("LEED") standard, a rating system recognizing buildings that incorporate high-performance design, construction and operational practices with reduced environmental impacts. PWGSC is pursuing LEED certification at the Silver level for the building, making it the first major federal government renovation project in Saskatchewan to seek LEED certification from the Canada Green Building Council.

I have a few suggestions:

1) Red Square
2) The GIANT Money Hole
3) The Magic Disappearing Money Department Building
4) Jane Stewart Building

... all great names paying tribute to a department which ran massive money wasting projects over the last decade or so.

Close, but no cigar to an NHL size rink.... AHL maybe....
Most AHL franchises are in markets over 500,000 so I don't see that happening soon either.

Perhaps an ECHL team..

Imagine: Victoria vs. Saskatoon.

Just being realistic. It's not like the Riders break even or make money every year like Edmonton and Calgary. Thus, the near million person market is not relevant.

My vote for the Galleria's new name is:

Hall of Pigs

The Galleria has been renoed so many times and as the saying goes, you can put a dress on a pig, but it's still a pig and these are government workers. Your tax dollars at work.

The new Wingate Inn will use both the old Army and Navy lot and the old Legion building. That's a large plot for a hotel that's noly 7 stories. Maybe they plan on stretching the hotel quite a bit horizontally.

You'd rather have an ECHL team over a WHL team? Heck, I'd prefer WHL over AHL.

I'd like an arena in the city, not in a field half way to North Battleford.

Well most CFL franchises only draw around 20-25 000 fans, so a 50 000 seat stadium might only be maxed out in a few places nationwide, but at least they would have the potential to have that many fans. The current stadium is a good size for CFL football right now, but I think a more modern facility that could be used year round would be much better. After all this IS Canada, the 2nd coldest nation on earth, and Saskatchewan in the winter isn't exactly a forgiving climate. Plus the economic model has been proven for this type of facility just across the border in N. Dakota, with half the population.

According to the NHL, a venue needs around 15 000 seat, so if all the seats were installed in the Credit Union Centre, it would qualify as an NHL sized arena. The only caveat of that is the lack of corporate suites, which were not mandated at the time of the design (1983) and construction (mid 80's I believe, '86?) of the facility.

A few years prior to Saskatchewan Place (Credit Union Centre) being built, a local Saskatoon architect came up with a proposal to locate an arena of similar size right downtown in the vicinity of the old A.L. Cole power plant.

It would have had u/g parking and was positioned in such a way that it could have taken advantage of the parking at Midtown Plaza. It also featured a public promenade along the river bank that tied quite nicely into the pathways and existing park areas.

Unfortunately at the time the Saskatchewan Government (under Grant Devine) was looking for a project to kick-start development on it's industrial and commercial land where you now have CU Centre. Politics sometimes has a way of screwing things up big time when the public interest would be better served with a centralized location. Downtown would have been a far superior location. Almost every transit route from every part of the city ends up going downtown.

If any project could have gotten the south downtown redevelopment going, an arena would have been a great choice.

I cannot remember the name of the architect but I think he had a terrific idea at the time.
