Anyone know how much of a difference a bored tunnel vs cut & cover has on the cost? They said tunnels were about 3 times more expensive than elevated guideways?

Cut & Cover in the CoV portion is a not an option, the streets are too narrow west of Alma. If the line through the UEL is run under the golf course it could be cut and cover west of Blanca.

Tunneling, per se is not the large cost of a RR. The vast majority are the stations, track, new cars, electrical systems, etc.

So it would actually be only a very small addition in costs to "go all the way" and have a tunnel come out on the center portion of University Boulevard.

But it would be an incredible time saver.

Keep going from Arbutus and you need one excavation pit somewhere in the 10th and Alma area. The Jericho lands come with their own population (and they are ten years from being built out) but you absolutely want to catch all the buses from Dunbar.

once the TBMs reach the new pit, you can refurb them there for the long climb to UB. You can also extract all the conveyor systems going back to Emily Carr, as you can simply the spoils at the new pit on 10th/Alma.

The tunnel would exit about 500 meters or so past Blanca. At that point, you haul the TBMs and brick up the entrance, waiting for the time when the politicians can divert enough money from their preferred projects and finish the job.

In the meantime, there is actually one hidden advantage in all of this. You can lay track for the first 300 meters and use it to store trains overnight, launching from there instead of from the yards somewhere in Timbucktoo.

It will be an elevated guideway once the track breaks from the tunnel, all the way to its end station.

^^No the current TBMs can not just "keep going" for multiple reasons, there is no reason for that idea to be brought up again and again.
If you have a source to support the statement that tunneling is not a major portion of the project cost please provide it.

Nope, that's not the plan. Either elevated along University Blvd then back underground before it reaches UBC proper or tunneled all the way going under the golf course aligned with 8th Ave. The UBC station will be underground regardless.

I just bumped the UBC thread, in case anybody wants to carry on speculating about routes, elevations or construction of that extension. None of those decisions have been made yet. This thread is for the current construction to (just past) Arbutus.

Arbutus North - Sept to today

North camera lens needs cleaning, apparently.

Main looking west. Should get more exciting later on as the construction is getting close to surface level and will be seen in this view as per Jollyburger's post above (Nov 8, 2023, 8:08 AM).

I think they have a temporary pole setup for some other utilities and the dome traffic camera. I think it's just a side bonus to have that much of the construction site in the view..

Saw some tunnel liners being trucked over the Knight Street bridge today so the number of liners in the yard won't mean anything until probably after they pass Granville.

Canada Line used 20,000 segments for 2.5KM (5KM in length for two tunnels)

Nice catch.
I guess you are right in that just looking at the liners in the yard does not work to predict progress until the very end.

Phyllis started tunnelling from Oak last night. Arrival at Hemlock should be around Jan 5th.

I am excited.

Jan 5 plus a month for refurb plus another two months means Phyllis is at arbutus by about April 1, give or take.

That is great news
