Here's a little experiment. I am sharing a Google Drive folder which currently contains one item: a photo overlay for Google Earth. It is the Bunny Yeager photo. It is really not ideal, since there is a building between the viewpoint and the hillside, so you need to turn off 3D buildings to see how the contour of the hill matches the one in the photo. The "adjust opacity" slider isn't conveniently placed. You need to toggle the "Find in My Places" search bar.

This apparently requires the Windows or Macintosh version of Google Earth.

Anyway, Here's the Google Drive:

Perhaps the cars were used/rented by movie companies?

_______

In the 60's it seemed in the fall a lot of people used to look forward to the car commercials to see what "new" cars were coming out on the market. I recall people talking about the new models and such. It seems when the '70s rolled around this started to disappear. Or was I not noticing? Do car companies still put out a new model each year?

The cars coming out in yesteryear seemed to be different and distinctive each year. Noticeable. I remember a couple from the '70's like the Gremlin, Pacer and Accord. In the '60s I recall the advertising for the Corvair, the Impala, the Mustang, Cougar and a 1969 Pontiac GTO called The Judge, which seemed only to come in orange and apparently was named after the popular Laugh-In phrase "Here Come de Judge." The advertisements would say that and things like All Rise for the Judge. If you wanted extras for the car it would say "the best way to appoint a judge." Also:

and Sorry for the SIDEBAR! (But the original photo was in Burbank.)
___

When I see car commercials now I really don't notice they look much different from one to another. Maybe it's just me.

riichkay, good eye in noticing Stanbury Buick katty-wompus from the Mayfield Used Car lot.

I found Mayfield listed in the 1944 Studio City Directory.

At that time it was located at 12001 Ventura Place. (eleven years before the eBay photographs)

Good news!

Two additional photographs showed up on eBay. (also dated June 1955)

The original two photographs Here

In re: recent posts about autos in general, here is an innovation that never quite caught on.....

Los Angeles: "Glass" tops for convertibles similar to the "blisters" and "bubbles" made by the Ford Motor Company for war planes, have been introduced in Los Angeles. The tops fasten at the same points as regular canvas tops, and are easily removed for storage in the family garage. Although colorless at this time, a choice of "tints" is planned for the future. The tops are said to be easy to clean, and that scratches on the surface of the quarter-inch plexiglass can be removed by polishing with auto polish or wax. Made by Fabriform Corp., of Byesville, Ohio, they are being distributed by a local Ford agency. Shown here is a convertible equipped with a 'full view' top are: Wilda Eggert (left) and Val Eckolt, in front seat; and Jim Dypuy (left) and Sally Hamblin, rear seat, all of the auto agency. 3/17/48

Images 1a and 1b are reversed. We are looking north; the large modern-looking building with the vertical stripes at the upper right of e_r's photos, next to the orange building, is the California Market Center at E 9th and Los Angeles St.

FLIPPED

Judging by the cars the two purplish slides of the ballfield park are correct the way they are.

A mystery location for Saturday night...(I have no life)

eBay

It's one of those instances where I found the address of an employee but not the address of the actual store.

lapl / for search purposes: Gambles Western Auto Supply Store

After looking closely at the writing on the reverse of the photograph I think the location might be somewhere along East Florence Ave.

Help.

Earlier this morning I happened upon this rppc on eBay.

It shows a McLassen Transit Co. in Westwood, California.

eBay

On the back someone has penciled in "Stage Depot". (below)

But the place (and cars) look too modern to be a stage depot.

Any ideas where this might have been located? ..The trees look more like northern California to me.

Here's another car lot mystery location. Interestlingly enough, this one has another photographer in the photo!

Like the others, this lot is also in Burbank.

eBay

I just noticed the lights are identical to the lights at Mayfield Used Cars but I still think this is a different location.

There are quite a few clues so hopefully we can figure this one out fairly quickly.

It's not McLassen, it's Mt Lassen Transit. Apparently still in business, this is from their website:
Mt. Lassen Motor Transit Has It’s Roots in Northern California

Established around the turn of the century with a stage operation serving the mill workers from Westwood to Susanville, Mineral and Red Bluff, Mt. Lassen Motor Transit rapidly expanded with routes in Oregon and Nevada as well as Northern California. Following World War II the bus line saw a marked decrease in service and eventually reverted to one bus route. In 1952 the office officially moved from Susanville to Red Bluff where they are still in operation today.
As far as I can see, this Westwood is a small town approx. 120 miles north of Sacramento and 75 miles east of Redding.

Thanks Hoss. I should have checked to see if there was another Westwood in California before I posted the postcard on NLA. :

Westwood is not a big place. It's not even a town. According to Wikipedia, "Westwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lassen County, California", with a population of 1,541 in 2020.

There was a Los Angeles Times article about similar confusion with Brentwood, California. It's something the Post Office is constantly dealing with.

It's frustrating that there doesn't appear to be any collection of scanned phone books online; white pages or yellow pages. That would make it easier to track down the photos containing Newberry's or the auto parts store. (I'm guessing that at some point Gamble's Auto Supply merged with Western Auto Supply.)

Copyright problems perhaps? The phone company made big bucks from people calling 411. The city directories must be a holdover from the pre-telephone era.

Maybe old newspaper advertisements contain listings of the chains' locations.

-----------

Lesson from news photographers: Go with what works:

ER, 2A looks like the area off of Valley Blvd in El Sereno where the elementary school is (northeast of Selig Zoo). The Newberry distro building kinda reminds me of what the former Bullocks distro building looks like. If you would continue to go east, you would cross the recently demolished Pacific Electric 4 track bridge..... I also may be totally wrong.

(either way i feel a former right of way for trains is the reason why we see some many triangle intersections and the reason for several streets in one frame)

I believe it's where Mission, Soto, and Huntington meet at the border of El Sereno and Lincoln Heights.
