^^ One quote from Ken in that article I like:

“One of the big things you’ll start seeing is this part of the city taking advantage of no longer being under the main runway approach for the airport.”
Do I smell highrises or what?

now, now...

the reference was in the quality of the environment and the urban edges at grade, not the ability to have unlimited height.

not that those are mutually exclusive but i believe the quarters is intended to be more like boston's "back bay" than downtown or oliver.

Designers pitch mood lighting as next downtown evolution

1297914287250_ORIGINAL (1) by BLACK STAR III, on Flickr

Sorry, Candy Cane Lane enthusiasts — Edmonton’s new creative winter lighting strategy is aimed at a subtler, gentler lighting scheme.

Expect lights that are less showy and more welcoming, less bright and more warm.

It’s about being “a better neighbour,” said Janet Riopel, president of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, whose historic bank building on Jasper Avenue and 100 Street will be the first project under Edmonton’s creative lighting pilot project.

Potentially a massive step forward for family friendly housing and a more inclusive community.

While I can appreciate some of the concerns, on these lots I very much support the rezoning and redevelopment. It is of high-quality and provides a diversity of housing and retail sizing and options. To be frank, Whyte needs this.

Development will continue changing the face of Edmonton in 2017.

Edmonton isn’t likely to see a construction boom in 2017, but the landscape will continue to grow as big projects wrap up and new work gets underway, say commercial real estate experts.

The downtown core is still the city’s development hot spot with $5.5-billion worth of work proposed or underway, including the Ice District’s 66-storey Stantec Tower and 54-floor JW Marriott Hotel-Legends Private Residences.

Although they won’t be finished until 2018-19, they’ll make a big difference to the look of Edmonton’s core over the next 12 months, says Avison Young principal Cory Wosnack, part of the district’s leasing team.

“You will see this massive physical change to the skyline … You will see two (new) towers.”

The cumulative impact and change from this is going to be absolutely massive. I am still not convinced people quite comprehend the magnitude of all of this.

Seeing a trend back towards this. RBG is cool and flashy but the shine wears off quick for a lot of people. A properly planned facade lighting that really accents a building's features is a lot more "future proof" design.

A great example of this done right and one of my favourite facade lighting jobs I've ever seen is the Chicago Athletic Building.

^^ I still cant believe it and im downtown almost every day!!

^ Yeah way better to do it this way. Less is more.

It looks classy and sexy also.

More old school in a way. Making your city look like Hong Kong or Dallas to me is unappealing.

for those that are interested in current plans for the brighton block:  http://primaveradevelopmentgroup.com/wp-.../Brighton-Block-Brochure-010717.docx.pdf

note to mods:  if this is considered advertising - and i'm aware it might well be to some - more than information, i'm happy to delete it.

Very excited that you have taken on this project Ken. I wish you good luck and all the best with it.

BTW...I have some interior photos from before the gutting including Ernest Brown's original prairie backdrop painted on the wall. If you are interested I can email them to you.

that would be great to have... email is now [email protected] . if you're okay with them being shared and used elsewhere, let me know whatever you consider reasonable as a fee in addition to regular access for you and hugh (which you could both still have regardless)...
