A theater will happen but it might take a financial incentive to do so.

It would be nice to see the development at 12th and Rose built with a movie theatre. It would fill in that giant parking lot and bring people in to that eastern edge of downtown. It might also spur more bars and restaurants at that end. All these new places downtown are great but they're all fairly central right now. I think it's good that they're close together because it makes it easy to walk from place to place and it makes everything feel busier (and therefore safer). I think it's at the point now where things can start to be developed closer to Broad and Albert without spreading things too thin people-wise (if that makes sense). Ultimately, I'd like to see walkable links between downtown and the Warehouse District/Railyards, Centre Square/General Hospital, and Cathedral neighbourhoods. I'd also like to see Broad Street properly developed and hopefully bleed into Heritage with 11th being an extension of downtown and some interesting residential developments in the area. I think the catalyst for that might be some development along the periphery of downtown might be the first step. At the very least I think it will improve the pedestrian experience downtown outside of the very core.

On that note, any ideas what could replace Scotia Bank in the Alvin Hamilton Building?

At one point, the plan was for the Government to just absorb that space as well.

This is about the Conexus new head office in Wascana Park (in U of R property). Personally I'm against it as it doesn't really fit the purpose of the park. At least if it was a restaurant or something, it would make sense.

Feds own the building. I'd be surprised to see anything other than federal tenants.

They've been moving a lot of folks into the building recently (rather than paying rent to multiple landlords scattered across downtown).

There is literally zero reason for this to happen and yet it almost certainly will be approved.

It's not downtown. There's plenty of empty space. There are plenty of existing office buildings they could purchase, etc, etc, etc.

Additionally, the existing office landlords would have pretty good grounds to complain because they would love to own office buildings in the park. But Conexus has been working on this project for 2 years, well before they supposedly put out a RFP.

One of my concerns with the project is where these people are going to park? Are we going to lose some green space so they can extend the parking lot?

I noticed this week that the Mosaic sign had been removed from the top of Tower III (south side) and there is protective scaffolding around the entrance to 20Ten. I know a few (two?) windows had broken on the building since completion. Does anyone know what the extent of the work is? Is there a serious issue with the glass that they needed to remove the sign?

I won't disagree that people are going less, but the Southland hasn't been a viable option to watch a movie in a long time. The viewing angles and seats are not worth the price of admission, which just puts a strain on the Galaxy. IF they could get rid of the Southland and put up a new and larger stadium seating theatre, I think we would be set.

I think there's a feeling that Regina has fewer screens than other cities of similar size - I did a quick check, we have about the same number (with Rainbow included); we also have about the same number of 'first run' screens.

The issue for me is the quality of our theatres - Normanview is a much, much nicer theatre than Southland. I live within walking distance of Southland, and I almost always drive to Normanview... if I'm going to pay the same price, why not get a better experience?

Do we need another theatre? No. Would it be nice to see Southland replaced/extensively renovated? IMO, yes.

To jigglysquishy's comment that Council would reject a theatre outside downtown, I echo BrutallyDishonest2's "Riiiiight." I think Council has long since demonstrated that developers hold huge sway (see: Quance)... and that development plans are viewed as adorable little processes that they need to undertake periodically. They are followed when it's convenient.

As an aside, I'm fairly sure that the idea that people are going to fewer movies is an urban legend. I'd be willing to bet tickets sold (not just box office $) in North America are immaterially different over the past 5, 10 or 20 years. Of course, ticket sales ebb & flow with the quality of the movies, so there are certainly good & bad years. Fairly sure I've seen that box office revenue is at least stable (even after adjusting for inflation).

EDIT: N.American ticket sales are roughly stable over the past 20 years; and inflation-adjusted revenue is also stable. 2012 was Cineplex's best year on record for theatre attendance. Cineplex's most recent report shows that theatre attendance is up over the previous year (of course, 2014 isn't a great comparison as it had a particularly poor array of movies... so people stayed away).

This is simply the North American population compared to box office tickets.

As you can see the trend is going downwards.
