BC used to have a decent presence of big American chains such as Tony Roma’s, Hooters, Applebee’s, TGI Friday’s, Macaroni Grill, Rainforest Cafe… but as of the last two decades have all disappeared despite thriving in Alberta and Ontario

The demographics are just not there, at least the lower mainland. Most of these chain restaurants serve sub-par food for high prices.

All the Asians are going to Korean/Japanese restaurants serving high-quality authentic food. The Millenials have Main street and commercial drive with hip restaurants. The boomers have their Italian restaurants in North Burnaby or White Spot.

BC is more than just metro Vancouver. But your point doesn’t explain why Earls, Cactus Club, Joeys are popping up like zits. We do have chain restaurants still dominating the industry, the difference here is that they’re almost strictly BC based. Which isn’t a bad thing at all. It just doesn’t give us in BC much selection that other jurisdictions have.

I mean sure we have the Keg and Boston Pizza, but Boston Pizza is garbage and even the Keg is starting to disappear.
We used to have East Side Mario’s, Swiss chalets and Montana’s, but again, all gone. BC based chain restaurants really do have a monopoly on the industry.

Swiss Chalet and Montana's are still here. The Keg hasn't closed any location that I know of and is always packed. I agree with Boston Pizza not being good for pizza, but their pastas are pretty good and I like the sports bar vibe their locations have.

The Earls on Lougheed by the Swiss Chalet is going to be rebranded into a new concept after the Earls at TAB opens. That's really all I can say

The one in Port Moody in Suter Brook was supposed to open in September as well - no news on a new ETA as far as I know.

To say the permitting process is back logged in Vancouver, would be like saying that Vancouver gets a rain drizzle once a while.

The City building department is in absolute shambles.

Tenant Improvement permits are taking months now.

Its egregious and directly detrimental to the health of the cities economy.
