Who gives a shit which skyline is bigger or better? I know this is skyscraper page and all but this entire argument is laughably ridiculous! After having seen Pacific Rim this weekend I'll ask you all this: which skyline would you rather see levelled by a Kaiju?

Speaking of Montreal, I am going there Aug 16th-19th and can't wait!! I've always liked the skyline especially from the top of Mnt Royal, it's very enchanting. But where Montreal kicks ass is the street vibe!

Fyi, the skyline is best viewed from the Lachine canal. It offers by far the most sweeping and panoramic view. Mont-Royal is cliched and really doesnt give a very thorough view.

I totally disagree with you Rico on this one. For me, Mont Royal offers the best views of the skyline, by far. And there are many places to see it from various angles up there. From the Lachine Canal, you only get the top of the highest buildings, not the whole thing from east to west like in this pictures:

^ I like how from Mnt Royal you can see the bridges over the river and how you are above the buildings. It makes it look very magical and has a great flow. I will have to check out the view from Lachine canal. How do I get there by bike/foot from the Old Port?

IMO, Champlain and Jacques-Cartier bridges both offer the best views of the skyline. Jacques-Cartier is accessible by bike/foot. This is unfortunately not the case for Champlain.

There's far more to a skyline than height, density and length. There are all kinds of aesthetic factors that come in to play to someone's personal preference. It's completely justifiable that someone might prefer Calgary's skyline to Toronto's.

I think it's kind of silly to compare Calgary and Toronto, TO is so massive that it's not even close. Calgary is more comparable to Vancouver and Montreal, all 3 cities have a similar sized skyline but each has their own aesthetic that makes them unique. Toronto is one of the worlds best skylines, Calgary is just starting to approach that level but isn't there yet.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and those that argue opinions are just insecure someone prefers another city to their own.

Personally I like Montreal, but it's slipped to my 4th favourite in Canada. Not enough new construction to keep up with the other 3, fortunately things are looking up in that department! I think Montreal wins for best street level though, tons of character and activity.

Calgarian: Ya, I don't know why some guys have to compare Calgary to TO! It's really not even a fair comparison. In the states it'd be like comparing Minneapolis to Chicago. Both have nice skylines.... for their size!

It's interesting that both Toronto and especially Calgary punch above their weight when it comes to the size of their population versus the size of their skyline. Calgary's skyline could easily go toe to toe with any major American city outside of Chicago or New York. Toronto's in a weird no-man's land where it's substantially larger than the rest of the pack, but still a ways off from being as big as Chicago or New York, though Chicago is at least within shouting distance.

Anyway, as far as my preference goes, I'd rank them as:

1) Toronto
2) Montreal & Calgary
4) Vancouver

It's hard for me to choose between Montreal and Calgary. Montreal's skyline has age, variety, depth, texture and ambiance, whereas Calgary's skyline is very sleek, imposing and powerful. I'm not so hot on Vancouver due to the extreme prevalence of bland green-blue glass condos.

I feel like people are blaming me for starting the most recent argument. I didn't chime in till it was well underway. I just dramatized it a bit...

I guess I can see why one would think I have a bias toward Calgary, as I live here. However, I just remembered that only about a year and a half ago, I had an argument with Caltrane (I think it was him) with me stating that Vancouver had the 2nd best skyline in the country, and I was a die-hard for both the Toronto and Vancouver skylines, as I had lived in both (at the time lived in Vancouver). I completely dismissed Calgary's skyline. I think Calgary seems to be a city that most dismiss until they've actually been or lived here. I wouldn't say the city is the greatest or anything, but I'll definitely say it blew me away and completely destroyed my pre-conceptions of the place. Having lived in 4 of the 6 major cities over 1 million in the country and several of the smaller ones, Calgary is the only one that has changed my life for the better... so I guess that may be why I defend it so vehemently.

I agree about the glass holding Vancouver back, but the setting makes it absolutely gorgeous! especially around sunset.
