entry level construction worker is not 20/hr lmfao

you can go in unskilled and after three years of showing up on time and working correctly you can find yourself earning 20/hr... but you don't start there

I've built 3 houses in Zilker....they start guys off at more than that actually....these guys are all trainees. Things have changed a lot recently.

You wouldn't believe what these guys (mostly undocumented) make. I think its great.

I recently hired some day laborers from Home Depot and I paid them $20/hr.

My housekeeper makes $140/ for 5 hours. That's $28/hr....zero skills for that job....and again, probably undocumented.....I never ask.

This actually made me curious so I called a couple of contractors just now....They both said they pay min $150/day (for entry level man labor.....and up to $250/dy if they have skills.....painting, tape float, masonry, tile, etc.)

They typically work 8 hours.....the guys that built my houses show at 9 and rarely stay past 5...and take an hour break.

I will also say the current economy is making odd-jobs impossible. I really want to wallpaper a couple of rooms in our house and no one will even write me back for a half-day job.

I remodel houses around Cental Texas for a living....and it's impossible to find anyone to show up and actually work...it's getting insane. $20/hour is now a reasonable starting wage....and I would be happy to pay it if they actually show up and work..... the last two years have been a struggle.

I get people to do these tasks (interior paint and wallpaper) through taskrabbit. I've had the job done within 48 hours after posting there. Hope that helps.

That's smart, quick search on TR pulled up a ton of people...the least expensive was $24/hr...most were $40-100/hr.

I've had great help/luck with pulling up any odd job on youtube...there will tons of people (some great, some not) explaining all sorts of jobs/tasks.

If I can change filters on my car with help of youtube, I bet these guys can teach themselves most anything now on youtube.

The whole, "I can't" attitude some people have is such bullshit. Sure you can. "Si se puede" Huerta's famous phrase that Obama put to work "Yes you can" are quickly forgotten, because "you can" means you may have to DO something. You may not want to....but you can.

I know one of my best subs taught himself everything he knows in the 80's-90's by hanging out at Home Depot....taking any job he could....then going to the home repair books HD sells, and teaching himself English by reading/figuring out how to do the job he just agreed to complete. Amazing story, he's put 3 kids through college, dude works 7 days a week, employs a small army of workers. (he was undocumented then, but now he is naturalized....not sure how that worked...don't really care...Alfonso is a great guy by me)

btw $20/hr translates to roughly nearly $42k/yr gross.....and most of these dudes HAPPILY work overtime on the weekends. I can easily see laborers make great money within a couple of years of starting if they work 50 hours a week. After a couple years you start to run your own crew, make even more. I've seen it happen over and over...it's how it's done.

At least parts of Austin's oldest strip mall are coming down.. seemingly at same time the temporary HEB at Congress & Oltforf is getting ready to open in next couple of weeks.

The original Twin Oaks sign is also now painted with an HEB logo. No pic of that.

I think the part they're tearing down is a later addition to Twin Oaks. The building where the HEB is going is the original strip mall.

I totally don't remember it being a Luby's. I didn't realize that. I do remember the Pancho's. It was one of the places we visited often back in the day. I haven't been able to find anymore around Austin, but there are two in Houston. We haven't been, but I would love to go sometime when we're in Houston.

Our neighbor also ran a beauty salon in the corner shop at Twin Oaks. The last time I was over there you could see where the sign still stained through. Our neighbor owned that place and worked as a bank teller downtown. She passed away about 5 years ago. I mowed her yard for her for years, and was friends with her granddaughter who lived with her.

My mom and dad remember it as a Luby's. Had to be very early 70s.

My parents loved that place.
When they bought their new home on Elmhurst Drive on the east side of I-35 in 1959, they bought their new appliances at Clyde Hill’s store in the Twin Oaks shopping center.

It seems like this has been mentioned before, but I don't remember where. There is a project called Stassney Campus that will be using four tower cranes per FAA filings. It has an 82' building, also per the FAA. I have seen it referenced on a city building permit that I can't find at the moment.
