"With the tremendous amount of growth in the South Jordan area, with Daybreak and other developments, we believe it would be wellreceived."

Utah Arts Council director Margaret Hunt agreed that South Jordan would be a good location for a major performing arts center and would greatly enhance the surrounding communities.

"I think [Sandy/South Jordan] is the center of the valley from a demographic standpoint," said Hunt, who was appointed by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. in January. "Arts and cultural infrastructure help shape the identity of the community. It gives a sense of pride, it provides a destination and it puts the name of a community at the forefront. Artists make communities vibrant, particularly when you have a creative core of people living and interacting within their community.

I'd say that since nothing has been mentioned about this, especially given the recent Sandy theater news, the project is dead, though it is a striking design.
I like the design of it better than the towers for sandy.. I mean everyone loves towers.. but the sandy project looks very plastic fantastic... and I for one think that the rendering of the south jordan performing arts center would be so much more classy and sophisticated.

I have been reading posts and enjoying this forum for a long time until recently. It has been a great source of information and has been very exciting until now. Unortunately it seems like we've scared away some of the most valuable participants due to bickering and unwelcomed drama... I would love to see more posts by the likes of Viperlord and Comrade and a few others again. (Future mayor, Urban Boy). I hope I haven't left anyone out. I really appreciate the research and knowledge you guys contribute.

I would ask that everyone else continue to contribute as well but please leave your baggage at the door. If you somehow get your feelings hurt on this forum, please try to let it go and do not retaliate or try to defend yourself, it won't do any good. I would suggest that you find some cool RELATED news to post instead, that is the best way to make yourself look good anyway.

I'll continue to add where I can, but lets keep the excitement alive!
Well, To be honest I havent really read through any of the threads very much lately due to the fact that they are all junk for the most part, sorry to say. Its been a real tease and fight on here and if you havent noticed I dont really get into that. I am all about downtown development business.

Well I know over the years I've had my share of forum squabbles, but I've tried to tone it down because really, I come here to discuss downtown development. Sometimes I'll talk about the Jazz or politics, but generally, I just care about what's going on in downtown.

Veering off topic is inevitable, but I think it's best we get this thing back on track.

Help!!!

Hey, all. I need your help. My firm is working with the State of Utah to try and locate the new Air Force Cyber Command at Hill AFB. If this command were to be located at Hill, the impact on the State's economy would be tremendous. Initially, only a little over 500 jobs would be moved to Hill, but Hill would become the center for much of the Cyber defense of this country and our allies. The spin-off from having the command located at Hill would be literally 1,000's of very high tech jobs from the contractor community necessary to support such a command.

Currently, 18 locations are being considered around the country. Some states (for example, Louisiana where the temporary Cyber Command is located) are offering up tremendous incentives for the Air Force to stand up the new command in their states. But the Air Force is not interested in buildings or tax incentives. It wants a place where it can attract and keep highly skilled engineers and scientists. However, critical Air Force contractors do need office space. Didn't I read somewhere in here about a new office development in Layton called Falcon Hill? Does someone have renderings of or know much about this development? What about other proposed office developments in northern Davis County or southern Weber County?

Ironically, I started pursuing this new command for my home state of Georgia, but soon realized Georgia doesn't have the right kind of Air Force facility for this command. So I turned to my native state, Utah, and found a lot of local officials who think the idea makes sense at Hill.

Here's a link that describes the new command in detail: http://www.wired.com/politics/security/news/2008/02/cyber_command?currentPage=1

In advance, thanks for your help. Yawl know far more about the local development environment than I could ever hope to know. I'm also guessing the readership here may also know more than local economic development officials because you are so much closer to the development environment.

I will probably be back to the forum in the future with other questions. The proposal is due July 1. Keep your fingers crossed.

RFPCME, You're talking about the article from the Davis Clipper that was posted over on the Ogden Thread. You should be able to track down a lot of leads from this article in order to obtain the different details you require.

Giant project could bring 50,000 jobs

In addition to the business park Delts mentioned on the west side of Hill, another developer has plans for an office park near Hill's new east gate. This 66-acre project is part of a larger 500-acre development. Read on.

Also, the Legend Hills development near the base's south gate continues to flourish with the growing Weber State-Davis Campus and the still planned Midtown Village development.

Thank you.

Delts and Utaaah: Many thanks. Since the Air Force is directly involved (it appears) with the Falcon Hill development (which is very unusual, I might add), base officials, who are working to attract the Cyber Command, will be very up to speed on the planned development. But I think there is no connection between the development and location of the command. I think their co-occurrence is luck.

What Falcon Hill does do is level the playing field a bit with the other states competing for the bid (e.g., Louisiana has already committed $100M in bonding for construction of commercial complexes to support the command if it is located at Barksdale AFB near Shreveport; Texas is proposing similar inducements for Lackland AFB near San Antonio). The other proposed developments near Hill just make it that much better.

Now when I talk with our people in Utah tomorrow at least I'll know to ask how the proposed developments may fit Cyber Command and critical contractor needs. Please keep me posted if you learn anything else about these developments. Thanks again.

Trails, a trolley and cops are prominent in Becker's budget
By Derek P. Jensen
The Salt Lake Tribune

A lattice of trails, a west-side river parkway, a street trolley, even electric cars.
Add a heftier police presence in neighborhoods and an overhauled planning operation, and you have Mayor Ralph Becker's spending priorities for his first year at the helm of Salt Lake City...

YAY, I love Mayor Becker!

Ah, back to development news?

I know that this can go in the CCC thread but figured this thread needed some development news even if it is small. Looks like a pylon/caison drill is being erected on the ZCMI block today

I think I found a good example of a boulevard in Downtown: 500 W. between 200 and 400 South.

Hill AFB/Falcon Hill Dev.

Air Force Cyber Command at Hill AFB Update:

I learned today that the Hill AFB/Falcon Hill development will be an integral part of the State's bid to attract the new Air Force Cyber Command, which may give Utah nearly equal footing with other states as they vie for this command.

The civilian officials at Hill seem very much on top of the opportunity and are working hard behind the scenes. It's gratifying to see civil servants working so hard for something that will give them no reward, other than knowing they did the right thing for their communities, state, and country. In sum, it looks like Utah has a fair chance of capturing this economic plum. Thanks for all the information I received yesterday on Falcon Hill.

yeah I would even say up to south temple on 500 west (if you are saying this because of the heavy landscaping and benches in the middle of the road)

Olmstead Gardens at the Capitol

so during lunch today I walked up and around the Olmstead Path at the Capitol. This is really nice, it will become better as the trees grow bigger. However I was put off by the surface parking lots that surround the southern and eastern side of the capitol building. Is there any hope that these will vanish underground or be replaced with a stylish/non noticeable parking garage?

Yes, and also there are two lanes in each direction with on street parking on both sides.

I think that fits most the criteria?

Also,

It does look like the building was supposed to have around six more levels.

Theater search down to 3 sites

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_9187481

2 buildings on Main and lot east of Squatters are finalists.
The hunt for a Broadway-class theater in downtown Salt Lake City has been narrowed to three sites, though a decision on the location has been bumped to early July.

Now that I've thought about it more, I think the parking lot next to Squaters would be the best choice of those three. My reasons for this are:

1. There are plenty of restaurants within a block and it's near Rose Wagner.
2. I really like the plans already in store for regent street and the Tribune building, and think a broadway style theater will mess them up.
3. If they choose the Utah Theater, the auditorium will likely be demolished, which I'd rather it not be so as to give it another chance for restoration as a film center.
4. 300 South is named Broadway.
5. This is a chance to add to the revitalization of that part of town, whereas, hopefully the two blocks south of City Creek Center can survive and even thrive as a arts and culture district because of alternate anchors and it's close proximity to City Creek Center.
6. Does not require demolition of any existing buildings; fills in a parking lot.

Just a few thoughts.
