I talked to Zocalo's Development Manager and he stated that the project could be up 20 floors.

I'm excited about the new Stanley Marketplace redevelopment at Stapleton. Looks great. Kind of like what they did at Lowry by the old hangars or the Source. Maybe it'll make Stapleton and Denver a little less "mediocre" for some people.

Does anyone know what is planned for the Empire Staples site on Platte Street now that they are moving? Who bought the land? It is the last riverfront site in downtown. I'm sure whatever is built there will just be mediocre anyway so I guess it doesn't matter.

This is great news! The sea of parking lots in this area of town is slowly receding. It's going to look completely different with the SkyHouse and these new buildings going up next to it.

According to BusinessDen, Trammell Crow will get the land on Platte Street, with plans for office and/or retail.

7NewsDenver has a story on Commons Park.

With fond memories of picnics and walking the area many times it's a sad change to see.

I recently poked fun at a Mexican maintenance worker in my community asking him if he kinda liked the girl he was talking to. I couldn't understand a word of what they were saying of course but they very much enjoy an older white guy treating them like real people - respectfully. How do you respect clowns like what have populated Common's Park?

Unfortunately, I think they're going to have to get rid of that embankment and add some security cameras. I don't think I've gone up there once and not seen sketchy stuff going on up there. What's really fun is seeing the 40 potheads take up the corner of the park and hang out for the entire day as they leave their litter all over the place.

Does Denver have more than their fair share of derelicts and drifters? Or, is this normal in every city these days?

I just got back from San Fransisco and it was far worse there. I do not know about other cities. I think the drifters here are just concentrated in three main areas: 16th st mall, Civic Center Park, and Confluence Park (and also by the rescue mission although that group is more of you typical homeless rather than the young dreadlocked drifters you are talking about).

Nothing scientific, but for everywhere I have been recently it seems about the same. I haven't seen the larger tent and cardboard shanty-towns under bridges that I saw in some places, but they might just be better hidden because of the no-camping law. It does seem like a lot of our new mall homeless are young hobo punks excited about legal weed, and they are really annoying.

Yep. It was the hardest part about living there for me.

San Diego seems to be fairly worse than Denver as well (but not nearly as bad as SF). It’s because of the climate. Ocean Beach is the neighborhood here that probably attracts the most pot-smoking huck finn’s, which spawned this:

Edit: (I should mention those stickers are sold by a local shop called The Black Ocean Beach. It wasn't the city or some neighborhood organization or anything like that responsible for it.)

I spend a lot of time in Florida and there are skads of homeless and transients, especially in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and the Keys. New Orleans, LA also. Not surprisingly, there seems to be more in the winter than in the summer. I think the problem is more visible in Denver than a lot of other cities because it does seem to be more concentrated in a few areas.

Yeah it is visible in Denver because it is concentrated in the business district (16th street mall/civic center) where everyone works or where yuppies live (Lohi/Confluence Park). If a neighborhood like barnum or athmar was experiencing what is happening in confluence (hell, maybe they are?) we probably would have no idea about it.

The challenge with confluence is any successful efforts to discourage vagrant behavior will inevitably end up with these jokers going to the 16th street mall, which is probably worse than the status quo.

King Soopers is open and is rather, er, super

Although it seemed that the new downtown King Soopers was totally filled with very excitable Kroger staff, the store is modern, bright and well stocked. If you stood in the right place and opened your eyes you could believe that you were in Wholefoods. Managed to do a weekly shop including lots of organic fruit, veg, eggs, meat. What a fabulous addition to Downtown.

My blender is a Blendtec.

Yeah I walked by it yesterday, Lumos. It looks like it will be well stocked. Still wish it had a bigger apartment building over it, but that ship has sailed.

If all you want is news, read the damn news!

I don't own a blender. But I do like me a new King Soopers, even if the food quality is still leagues behind Whole Foods.
