Here's a look at how the tower will replace the view of the Scotia Tower from City Hall.

And the placement of the office tower.

I think I actually like the view of the Scotia Tower better!

But kudos for inventiveness in getting around the view cone policy.
Now just step 10 ft to the left - oops the blockage is wider than it was before.
(i.e. I think the whole view cone policy is quite arbitrary)

Good god! That's a long meeting. The longest one during my time was 6.5 hours and we were completely drained by the end.

Here are a couple of snapshots of the model for Telus Garden while it was still undergoing finishing touches and assembly at B+B Scale Models on Granville Island.

Podium. This is the Richards facade and Robson is on the far left. The Kingston Hotel is immediately to the right of this model.

Taken by SFUVancouver, December 30th, 2011.

Tower. Note the LED lighting effect on the crown. The colours cycled.

Thanks for the pics.

Hopefully Telus will be more diligent with the upkeep of the LED lights on the new tower than it has been with the LED light display on the William Farrell Building renovation (the added curtain wall has coloured LEDs that shine inwards to the older building, but they only operated for about a year after the reno).

You can see them shining pink in this shot from the PerkinsWill website (they changed colours):

Very glad about this project, particularly the way it sort of extends the "boundary" of downtown eastward on Georgia. The office building canopy is interesting (just hope it isn't designed to look to harsh or utilitarian).

However (and I know people will guffaw and spit), I just can't get to like the condominium tower. Sure it's different than the usual Vancouver round-with-green-glass stereotype, but I can't get used to that horizontally "broken up" aspect of it.

I wish it could have been more elegant. To me, it just isn't.

I agree. There is something awkward about it.

Hopefully it will look better once constructed.

It makes me want to knock it over and yell Jenga!. However, I am a bit biased >.>;;

On a more constructive note, looking at this photo, it's amazing the change it will bring to this part of downtown.

Looking at the model pic - it really screams out for a taller podium along Robson - to balance the William farrell Building next door. Not necessarily the same height - but just a few more.

Given that this is Westbank, I expect the curtain wall (looks like big spandrel panels on the south side) will look more like Fairmont rather than Capitol.

It would be so cool if they tore down the Kingston hotel, and not build the condo, and made the whole block Telus office space.

It could be TELUS Campus or TELUS Block.

Probably not financially feasible, though.

At any rate, it will finally fill up that empty ugly space beyond the Scotia Tower, where downtown seems to abruptly cut. It will certainly be great "infill" if nothing else.

Downtown only seems to "abruptly stop" at Scotia Tower because Scotia Tower is so much taller than the other towers in the area.

I think part of the awkwardness is because the three "sections" on the tower bear no relationship to the proportions on the podium - so it's a very awkward pairing. i.e. it looks top-heavy.
If there were 5 sections on the tower, each roughly the same height as the podium, then that would be more balanced.

The massing of the residential makes no sense... it's like they've simply cloned the "tower on 3-storey podium" template without thinking about the context. The tower is too fat and slabby too; it'll miniaturize the scale of the other buildings in the skyline, making the skyline look smaller. This would have been the perfect location and context for the Shaw Tower typology, with fat office floorplates for the first 10 floors, followed by small residential plates up top.

Agreed. If the bottom of the residential tower was office you could really get creative with the design and maybe even adjoining it to the existing Telus building on Seymour.

I would be curious to know whether the residential tower's fat side is any fatter than the fat side (i.e., the rounded side with protruding box) of Capitol.

Will the logo be visible as you head west on Georgia St. or will the Library Square tower block it?

The fat side of Capitol maxes out the width of the block from alley to street (which Telus does too) - so assuming that the block widths (alley to street) are the same, you should get an idea from the floorplate layout. Looks a bit bulkier than Capitol.
Both are shown here:

BTW - looking at that plan, the Budget lots look to be a decent size for an office project.
