Won't be long and Saskatoon will be at 500K, we should be at 400k maybe next year? We have a chunk of prime land nearish the center of the city. A portion should be used for the whole city, maybe sporting precinct? Most growing cities wouold kill for something like this.

As for Griffith, the west stands came close to being condemned a few years back. Instead of renovating, build something new that actually speaks, big city not small town.

Saskatoon years ago briefly looks at trying to host the Commonwealth Games. Hell right now we probably don't have the facilities to host a Saskatchewan games? Just don't want to see a prime space filled with cheap ass walkup apartments and rowhousing....

Saskatoon’s next rec centre decoupled from new high schools

City’s new aquatic facility to be built separately from Saskatchewan’s largest high school complex

By Phil Tank
CBC News
Jan 09, 2026

Construction on Saskatoon’s newest recreation centre and indoor pool is expected to begin next year on the city’s eastern edge.

But the $65-million project will not be built on the same property as Saskatchewan's largest high school facility, which will accommodate a public and a Catholic high school with an estimated 3,600 students.

Crisis is right. Why would the University build a bigger stadium when the Huskies couldn't get even 4,000 out for the Churchill Bowl? Playing in front of several thousand empty seats sucks. Trust me, I was at the Vanier Cup.

I don't remember Saskatoon considering the Commonwealth Games. They considered bidding for the World University Games in the late 1990s, but that didn't go anywhere.

I have heard from a good source that the University is planning to bulldoze the west side stands and build a new, larger grandstand with upgraded press boxes, maybe beginning this fall. It will also be built far closer to the field now that they don't have the track. That is all that would be needed to make Griffiths one of the top USports-specific football venues. The east side stands and clubhouse already rival any other program, and upgraded west-side stands would put Griffiths in the same category as Richardson Stadium in Kingston or Western Alumni Stadium in London.

I agree with Crisis that a new score clock/video board at Griffiths would also be really nice.

I live in this neighborhood and it would be great to see increased density along Clarence Ave...now, if North Prairie could just get their SH!T together to get going on Clarence and College!!!

Just waiting to hear the president of Varsity View Community Association start screaming from his rooftop, though....lol

Saskatoon grew by roughly 9,000 in the CMA last year to be at 380,000 population.

https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=1710014801

Another year or two and 400k should be reached even with the slow down in immigration. Heck by the mid 2030's we could be at 500k. Time for the city to start developing like a big city.

I created this table for Saskatoon but can't figure out why these numbers are off from the CMA figure

I used all of the municipalities (Census subdivision CSD) part of the CMA from 2021

In 2021 the CMA was only 328,000+. 2026, and the estimate is 378,000+.

Five years and 50,000 people.

Interesting to see in Wigs' chart that the % growth in Saskatoon proper has outpaced that of the bedroom communities in the past few years. That wasn't the case over the prior couple of decades.

It's also good that Saskatoon suburbs are small. You don't want to deal with the power struggle when suburbs grow to be like 25-35%+ the population of the core city like what occurs in many American Metros.

If Saskatoon did grow between 8000-9000 people last year that is very impressive especially with all the economic uncertainties going on in the world today. There is a major push right now in Canada for critical minerals to be developed and I believe Saskatoon could be mining capital for these companies head offices. Currently the mining head offices include Nutrien, K+S Potash, BHP, Cameco, Orano to name a few and the following junior companies Max Power Mining Corp, Gensource potash, CanAlaska uranium, Star Diamonds, and Upcycle Minerals to name a few that are based in Saskatoon let’s hope some of these junior mining companies actually do build a mine which would create more jobs for the city

Expanding on this, I’m wondering why some mining companies have their head office in other provinces with essentially a satellite office in Saskatoon, when their only project is in Saskatchewan. Companies like NexGen, Foran, CEM and Denison Mines are operated out of Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. Why is there no interest to have all of the operations in Saskatoon? Is it because of image to investors or ability to attract white collar workers?

It’d be great to have all of these companies fully headquartered in Saskatoon and really establish the mining industry. Companies like Nutrien and BHP with head offices in Saskatoon have contributed a lot to the city in many ways (directly and indirectly) so I imagine it’d only be a good thing to have more companies with massive revenues and high employee counts here.

Foran just got taken out by Eldorado Gold, so that one ain't happening. NexGen will eventually be acquired too.

I had posted this in the Canada forum regarding Saskatoon CMA's current Statistics Canada population estimates versus the 2021 census figures. Even accounting for the shaky figures of the COVID-era census, this shows a really robust population growth basically all over the CMA, with only a couple exceptions.

I hesitated in cross posting it as I saw I had already missed the boat on the population estimates talk, but Wigs encouraged me to cross-post it, so here it is:

It would be nice to see the downtown arena project run by a local company(as long as it's well ran) as opposed to an American company. Article from CBC, Phil Tank

If you can find a local company with the experience and knowledge tell them to put a proposal forward.
