I don't know exactly, i am just trying to be creative.
It sounds strikingly similar to what the mall replaced. It's amazing to think of the years of public debate and the millions of column-inches in the Free Press that went into coming up with the perfect solution to the decay of the north side of Portage: the indoor mall. The result was that anything that was any good on the south side of Portage (e.g. Holts) moved into the mall, causing the south side of Portage to become just like the north side. Meanwhile the mall lasted as a desirable destination for a couple of years at most before turning into what it is now. But at least it gave the predicted boost to Eaton's and the Bay ... well, maybe not.

Holt Renfrew used to be on the south side of Portage? Can you refresh my memory a bit on exactly where it was? I was only about 10 years old when Portage Place was built.

Nope. Children's Advocate was Mark's and Spencer. Holt Renfrew was in the whole building to the west, including the Warehouse One space.
But originally, back in the day, it was on Main St.

I remember the Mark's and Spencer as my father always brought back shrimp cocktail chips from there and I remember there being a Woolworth or some sort of department store on the SW corner of Portage and Carlton. It had a long diner type stand inside it.

Really can't picture the Holt's for some reason...maybe it was before my time.

I think that department store was called metropolitan. I would always go there with my mom after getting my braces adjusted at my orthodontist in the Boyd building. That was there long after Portage Place opened though.

It didn't really hold the attention of small boys very well.

There was a similar building where Newport Center is now, but Holt's was in the one further west, which is Modern and Warehouse One now.
The Met was beside it, and then Kresge's, all where Hydro is now.
Kresge's burned down in the 70s.

Rumours of H&M in Winnipeg swirl again

Rumours of the pending arrival of the Swedish-based "fast-forward" fashion retailer have been swirling in Winnipeg for several years but while it appears to be a step closer, a company spokesperson confirmed that no new locations have been announced.

"I believe the tweet was reaching out to our customers to see where they would like the next H&M to be," the spokesperson said via e-mail.

One local marketing expert said Thursday’s tweet indicated to him that H&M’s arrival in Winnipeg is a fait accompli.

"I think that means they’ve found their location," said Robert Warren, a marketing professor at the I.H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba.

Much like Hollister or Forever21, both of which recently arrived in Winnipeg at Polo Park Shopping Centre, H&M – the initials stand for Hennes & Mauritz - offers "cheap chic" clothing targeted at the younger demographic. Warren said certain items on its shelves could be in today but out of style a couple of months from now.

"If you’re looking for something that will make you look like you follow the fashion magazines, (H&M) is definitely the place to go to," he said.

Holt Renfrew relocated to Portage Place on September 17 1987 when Portage Place was built. It was ... I can't remember... but close to Portage Place location.

^^^^I'm sure they will be using those sites to gain entry into the market. If you travel to the states much Target has gotten away from mall attached stores and build their own stand alone buildings. They will be purchasing land in short order i would imagine.....as well i would think that 4 stores is under serving the Winnipeg market. My guess is that you would see new stores built in the Kenaston Common/Ikea area, Sage Creek/ South St Vital area, NK/ East St Paul area, Garden City area and West Wood/ St James area.
