Pretty sure it was posted a while ago. We were discussing how BA's 789s only have 2 more seats compared to the 788s.

However they do have 8 First class seats.

I couldn't tell the difference but when I was booking a flight with BA (YYC-LHR) for May, it showed the plane as 787-8. It would be nice if the new terminal got finished soon but I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer.

Hmmmm. AA is now showing YYC-PHX back online 15 December. Don't know if temporary or not... And yeah it's a long way before next winter scheds are finalised but they are showing again.

Anyone have any super top secret way of tracking lost baggage? Air Canada is, once again, useless...

Oh no, I'm flying AC tonight with a long overnight connection in YYZ.

Do they have it on their app? Some airlines have a way to track your lost bag on their app. Super useful.

If you can track a lost bag doesn't that mean it really isn't lost but rather just in the wrong place? Lost implies the location is not known and therefore it cannot be tracked.

While the culprit clearly sounds like a twit, the 9km buffer mentioned in the article seems a bit much for run-of-the-mill drones.

I found their app, but I wouldn't call it super useful. My wife finally got her bag, ànd the app still says it is en route to the airport, where it arrived 2 nights ago. AC's India call centre is particularly useless. And as my brother(westjet pilot) always tells me, nothing good ever comes out of flying through Toronto. Going to have to agree. Good luck!

One of the friendly folks on the YYC spotters page snapped a tarped-over shuttle on its track - seems more substantial than I originally imagined:

Agreed. It probably didn't help previously with YYC folks called it a large golf cart. This almost looks like an open-air van.

Do any of the aviation buffs here know exactly what the 9 km is measured from? For example, the Boer War Memorial in Central Memorial Park is 7.05 km from the closest part of the old N/S runway, 7.79 km from where it crosses the E/W runway, 9.54 km from where it crosses the NW/SE runway, 9.49 km from the closest part of the new N/S runway, 10.04 km from the new control tower, 10.56 km from the closest gate at the terminal, and 11.44 km from where Airport Road meets Barlow. (Google Earth is fun!) If the definition is the closest part of the airport, then a much larger part of the city (including the downtown/Beltline and university areas) are off-limits.

If the 9 km rule also pertains to heliports, then virtually the entire city is off-limits; the only residential communities (mostly) over 9km from the airport or a heliport are Bridlewood and Somerset, Rocky Ridge and Nolan Hill; parts of Sage Hill and Tuscany qualify too, as does a portion of the SE industrial area S of 61 Ave, E of 44 St and north of the irrigation canal.

If you have to name a single point which the exclusion zone radiates, it would the airport reference point N51°06'50.00" W114°01'13.00" as described in the Designated Airspace Handbook. That's where our control zone radiates from. It actually isn't 9km distance, but 5 statute miles (we use imperial in aviation). Newspapers usually translate all our imperial measurements into metric. And yes, a helipad is an aerodrome, so are private airports. They are all listed in the Canada Flight Supplement, available at your local pilot supply shop. There are around a dozen in the Calgary region. People also fly from unregistered or abandoned aerodromes.

Drones are a big grey area and frankly I don't want them near any aircraft I am controlling. If a drone is 200 feet above ground (AGL) and below, it shouldn't be an issue, but that all changes directly near airports. At airports there are many more low flying aircraft that just by the runways, lots of helicopters and small aircraft can be in all areas by an airport.

Even not near an airport there are low flying aircraft. We have almost daily pipeline patrols that are only a couple hundred feet above ground, as well as crop/mosquito spraying, forestry operations, fire fighting etc.

Transport Canada has never been accused of under engineering safety rules.

The 9KM rule is probably borrowed from some over rule that has existed well before drones were invented.

ETA: I was right, the aero drone restriction is due to requirements to be 5nm away from all aero drones for unregulated aircraft. Additionally, the use of UAV exemption restricts the aircraft to class G airspace. Class G by is very nature is unregulated airspace.

The same restrictions for UAV also applies to developing buildings over 9 stories, the developer must obtain a clearance letter from the airport manager if the development is within 5nm of the airport. These letters are usually formalities.

The Calgary Bow Crow heliport would easily take Tuscany and Rocky Ridge off of your list and probably Nolan Hill and Sage Hill as well. So that leaves the very western portions of Bridlewood and Evergreen plus possibly some of the extreme eastern industrial parks - problem is that built up area statement and that would kill probably anything that is left for UAV's in Calgary.

Now off of this topic but still YYC related, my kids and I stumbled upon a spot where we can park and watch apron activities at the terminal and a lot closer than most people might expect plus it is not uncommon for taxiing aircraft to pass left than 30 feet away from you. We've only been there twice and always after 6pm because it is a parking lot of a private business but there are no signs posted to say one can't park there, not even signage saying it's a private parking lot and it is not gated either - one can drive right off of a public street into this lot. Knowing this, is one in danger of using this lot to watch aircraft and apron activities - would the YYC security chase us from there? The last time we were there we had some military trainers taxi by not even 30 feet away, was kind of neat.

YBW would take out most of the UAV flying over Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, and other western areas of the city.

Appears you have found the ATS parking lot. Generally speaking security will. It chase you, however you could be respectful to wishes of the ATS employees and desires to have others leave if asked. I too have spotted from this location, however each time only for a few minutes.

I found a rather entertaining read about one persons idea of how airports could function in the future. Heck I wouldn't mind living in some of these flats if it means I can spot from my balcony!
Despite how much of a fantasy this is I give props to the detailed amount of research content.

An interesting concept except for the fact that you'd have jets taking off within a few feet of your windows/balconies. The exhaust blast and heat, not to mention the deafening noise, might make the morning coffee on the balcony somewhat uncomfortable.

Do airlines that provide this app charge extra for that too???
