CBC NEWS: Work underway at Capital Pointe condo site in Regina

There have been a few false starts, but it looks like work is finally underway at the Capital Pointe site.

That's the hotel and condo development that's going up at the key Regina intersection of Albert Street and Victoria Avenue.

The developers says the project will include a 26-storey condominium building and a 12-storey hotel. (Capital Pointe)

Work was originally supposed to begin shortly after the Plains Hotel was torn down in 2011. Ownership of the project changed hands and there was little action on the site for years.

However, crews were digging up earth Thursday. The new completion date is 2018.

Attending a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday were officials from Fortress Real Developments, the company that owns and has financed the project; and ITC, the construction company that's building the project.

The 26-storey condominium part of the project will be the tallest building in Regina. Included in the project is a 12-storey hotel.

I noticed on Thursday that they had the south side of the building blocked off and they were doing some digging.

Now there are musings about a marijuana "joint" opening up in Regina. (Akin to the one in Saskatoon.)

?? People are expecting to not get tickets when they don't plug the meter? Or is parking enforcement tasering people for not parking straight?

They may not have been tasered, but I have heard some stories about people getting tickets for the latter; I cannot personally confirm these stories are true though. But generally, I agree... Plug the meter and you'll be fine.

The problem that people are ignoring is that sufficient supply is due to strict enforcement. There are spaces to be found because the pricing is good and you get tickets if you overstay.

Downtown parking is much better than before.

The main thing is that you need to be within 2m of the meter and not more than 24 inches from the curb.

Many people have always been irrational about parking. Some will endlessly circle the block to find an open street space, driving right past the paarkade with $2 evening parking. Some will wait several minutes for a spot that is 30 seconds closer to the door in a lot.

This is unlikely to change unless we get thousands more people livng downtown or using transit. For now, the best bet is optimizing street parking and trying to nudge people into parkades. If you look at the locations where Saskatoon has vibrant street level retail, it is where there is angle parking in front.

2 FEET?!? If people can't handle parking within 2 FEET of the curb, and within 6.5 feet of the meter, not only should they get a ticket, SGI should require a driving re-test.

Regina is exceptionally generous with these distances. Ottawa gives drivers 1/4 the distance: within 6 INCHES of the curb, and the vehicle front (or back, depending on meter position) must be directly in front of the meter... so, basically, 6 feet closer to the meter than Regina requires.

Calgary is even less generous - your vehicle must be within 2 INCHES of the curb.

Yep - many Reginans have the mentality that they must be within feet of their destination... even if the time they spent circling could have been spent walking to their destination. And we seem to hate parkades - I keep hearing how there's not enough parking downtown... take a look at the top deck of most any downtown parkade during a weekday (presumably their busiest time), usually plenty of open spots.
e.g.: most of the top two levels of the Delta Parkade are empty right now. I bet the parkade is 1/2 full at most. 3 min walk to the Cornwall (all of it indoors, if you like).

People have this irrational belief that parking has to be free. Land costs money. Construction costs money. Maintenance costs money. If parking is free than it's (usually) taxpayers that pick up the tab. Whether through direct servicing costs or in lost revenue from undertaxed parking lots.

Yes and some people believe that having a child with a disability means that you can park and completely block the sidewalk with impunity.

Good. If one parks in two spaces, they should have to pay for two spaces. If anything, that's the thing which annoys me most at the university.
