To MARK the Administrator first, i wanted to correct you when you said, at least once or twice, that "I" deverted this thread the last time from construction to other crap - this is NOT TRUE, as quoted here, SEVENSIXTWO came out in post 302 with that FIRST argumentative, underhanded, cheap, INSULTING remark about ME - which came out of nowhere & had nothing to do with construction so, for you to claim that "I" started getting people off topic is completely false second, i understand that you felt you needed to suspend someone on here, i get that but why you would suspend ME & not the person who started this crap --- for the life of me, i dont get it, maybe you can be a little more concisive next time & not pick on the guy DEFENDING himself oh, & hopefully the "picking on conservatives for being conservatives" crap will stop that's all i have on thatTHANK YOU, finally someone said it - that seems no matter what they do, color wise, or design wise, the top of the building seems so BLAND I love the Atlantic's crown EXECPT for the color anyone know why they thought it would be too expensive to simply PAINT it gold BTW, if you look at it from a distance, or simply glance at it real quick, the "trick" of combining TAN on top of BROWN creates a "GOLD" overall look - neat but CHEAP n stupid, frankly oh, & i dunno about those BROWN ornamentations - they look great but the color - yeeesh I kind of feel the only 2 problems with Mansions crown is it isnt high up enough to simply COVER that mechanical stuff on top and everyone's seen how there's about a 6 foot GAP between the roof & where the crown begins ---- how CHEAP???
Sigh...I kind of enjoyed the peace and quiet this past week.

aHAHAHAHAHA!

Great, the attacks have even continued into my DEVELOPMENT related posts.

But you're right, how dare any of us criticize the architecture of our own city - instead we should just shut up & talk like complementative, mindless robots that love EVERYTHING about Atlanta.

Dude, relax. It's not so much the content of your posts rather your attitude. Calm the ***k down and chill out, that's all they're saying.

Very nice pictures, St. Regis was defenitly nicely done. I saw the original crown design for the Atlantic and it was defenitly more ornate than the watered down version you see now. This is still an impressive project for novare who usually seeks out a design that is more minimalistic (cheap).

Great news...This includes Atlanta. It appears on the very small map that Atlanta is connected to Birmingham and New Orleans to the southwest; Macon, Savannah and Jax to the south; and Charlotte to the north.

Fed to invest $13 billion in nationwide high-speed rail project
Atlanta Business Chronicle

Map of proposed rail corridors

Four months after unveiling a high-speed rail plan for the United States, the federal government is now allocating money to get the ball rolling.

The White House and the U.S. Department of Transportation on Thursday said it will invest $8 billion from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and $1 billion a year for five years as a down payment to develop a passenger rail system and put the transportation policy on the right track.

Georgia is one of the states where rail corridors would be established.

Overall, the program will have 10 high-speed rail corridors that would be potential recipients of federal funding. Those lines are: California, Pacific Northwest, Chicago Hub Network, Florida, Southeast, Keystone, Empire and Northern New England. Also, opportunities exist for the Northeast Corridor from Washington to Boston to compete for funds to improve the nation’s only existing high-speed rail service.

“A major new high-speed rail line will generate many thousands of construction jobs over several years, as well as permanent jobs for rail employees and increased economic activity in the destinations these trains serve,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. “High-speed rail is long overdue, and this plan lets American travelers know that they are not doomed to a future of long lines at the airports or jammed cars on the highways.”

There will be two types of projects for funding under the government’s plan -- create new corridors for world-class high-speed rail like that found in Europe and Japan, and make train service along existing rail lines incrementally faster.

Funding for the projects would be broken down by:

• Individual projects: Providing grants to complete individual projects that are “ready to go” with completed environmental and preliminary engineering work — with an emphasis on near-term job creation. Eligible projects include acquisition, construction of or improvements to infrastructure, facilities and equipment.

• Corridor programs: Developing entire phases or geographic sections of high-speed rail corridors that have completed corridor plans, environmental documentation and have a prioritized list of projects to help meet the corridor objectives. • Planning: Entering into cooperative agreements for planning activities (including development of corridor plans and state rail plans) using non-American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) appropriations funds. This third approach is intended to help establish a structured mechanism and funding stream for future corridor development activities.
Funds could be awarded as early as this summer, according to the government.

Do you think they will put an Athens stop on here? I remember there was a proposed brain-train awhile back connecting Athens (UGA), Decatur (Emory), and Atlanta.

Also, I found a cool rendering of the CONRAC at the airport:

Hmm..

I don't think the high speed rail itself would have stops in smaller destinations.

That would ruin the best selling point of high-speed rail. In order for it to be effective and competitive we need to be able to use the high speed rail to get to larger locations faster than other alternatives at a cheaper cost. If we're stopping at every town like Athens you'd slow the travel time down a lot.

What I imagine would happen is that lines like the "Brain Train" would connect with major hubs. So while Athens can connect to the system, but not to the high speed rail line directly.

The Brain Train is part of a larger project using existing railroads that have either fallen out of use or rarely used. The project consists of multiple "tentacles" extending from a central hub in Atlanta. I think its a great idea. I've seen presentations on the Brain Train before and with stops near north Fulton and in Atlanta itself I would've used it to get home, visit friends in Atlanta, and attend events in Atlanta all the time.

One could also commute from Athens to Atlanta to work.

I think they said the commute would be around 1-hour and considering traffic in and around metro-Atlanta that's great.

Brain Train is commuter rail, most likely self propelled DMUs.
And it has about 10 stops before it terminates downtown.

Even though the high speed rail already travels through Macon and Savannah.
It'll only travel from the transit center of Macon and Savannah to the transit center in Atlanta.....then on to the rest of the country.

New president has big plans for GSU

Becker trying to remake school’s image while cutting budget

By JEFFRY SCOTT

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Thursday, April 16, 2009

In the first of what he vows will be an annual state of the university address, Georgia State University’s new president Mark Becker told his audience Thursday that his greatest challenge is to change the world’s perception of the state’s second largest university.

And, he said, he is doing that a time when he will also have to cut expenditures, including a plan to shut the school for two weeks at the end of this year to save hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“There are numerous details associated with such a plan, but they are manageable,” he told a crowd of about 900 gathered in the Student Center ballroom at the school’s downtown Atlanta campus.

After the speech, Becker said the closure — brought on by budget cuts across the state university system — would not interrupt classes: “It’s the only time of the year when the university has no classes scheduled.”

In the speech, Becker, the former provost at the University of South Carolina, laid out his broad ambitions for the 96-year-old school since he took the helm in January, succeeding GSU’s president of 16 years, Carl V. Patton.

Becker, 50, said he wants to channel money and effort into transforming the school into the “premiere urban research university.”

He invoked, as a kind of working slogan for that scheme, a mixture of an old advertising pitch for Virginia Slims cigarettes and a line from poet Robert Frost: “We’ve come a long way baby, but we’ve got miles to go before we rest.”

That line brought laughter. This one — “The average SAT score has increased [at GSU] from 1003 in 1995 to 1081 in 2008, and it’s projected that this fall we may hit 1100 for the first time in our history” — brought applause, including his own.

Becker invoked the name of that other new president, Barack Obama, and drew a loose parallel with Obama’s politics of inclusion and diversity in the shaping of GSU’s future.

“Our student body is diverse in race and ethnicity to the point that it represents the future demographic profile of our nation,” he said, noting that its student body of about 28,000 is 27 percent black, 11 percent Asian, 5 percent Hispanic, and 4 percent multi-racial.

He said the school soon will start touting its achievements to the world, and will even get so fashionable as to go “green,” which is not easy, he acknowledged, for a school built smack downtown.

When the school’s first football team takes the field in fall of 2010 playing its first game at the Georgia Dome about 10 blocks away, it will complete the transformation of the school from a Concrete U commuter college, to “the complete college experience in the heart of a major city,” Becker said.
