Revisions to the original design proposal will be presented to the community on Jan 27, as per this note from the Old Ottawa South planning and zoning group:

Quote:
The development team for the proposed six-storey apartment building at the corner of Bank and Aylmer (where Siam Kitchen, Boomerang Kids, and the Barley Mow are located currently) has made revisions to the design that was presented to our community back in June 2019. Come out and see what’s new!

The meeting will be held at the Firehall on Monday, January 27, 2020 at 7:30 pm.

It will be interesting to see what they have come up with. The developer seems well engaged with the community.

Looks nice enough and it's scaled nicely to the location. I like the 'Old Ottawa South' wording on the North wall. Odd that it says 'Old Ottawa S.' in the second rendering. Chances are it won't have this feature anyhow, but it would be a cool sort of gateway to the neighbourhood, especially if it was lit up at night.

Wish the ground floor retail was smaller: we are losing so much at-grade main-street space to places that can be little more than Shoppers Drugs Marts.

I assumed that they would be targeting a restaurant for the bigger space. There is a restaurant there now and the developer is a restauranteur.

Do I recall correctly that the developer indicated some months ago that it would be a number of years before this project might proceed?

He must have landed a day earlier.

Taxi to Quinn's, fritter the day away, start walking the next day. Sounds like a good trip.

I love how they take a Google Street view grab from 2015, without a pedestrian or cyclist in sight clear all the way to the bank street bridge, and draw a couple in to give the illusion that the street is something other than a busy suburban 4 lane arterial road

Or a four-lane traditional mainstreet; potato, potahto.

Have Old Ottawa Southians got up in arms yet about the heritage value of the parking lot?

No, even they admit the surface parking lots are terrible.

BUT, I joked with some friends who live in OOS about NIMBYs and pointed out that I bet a bunch of their neighbors are upset about this development.... well it turns out they HATE this development and I SHOULD NOT BE JOKING about it. Apparently the fact that a 6-story building is being proposed in a location zoned for 4-stories is absolute sacrilege and will "ruin the privacy of the rear neighbors" (their house backs on to the commercial strip in a different location). They also think the owner of this property is a terrible person... if I remember correctly because he also owns the McDonalds in the Glebe maybe?

This is honestly one of the best traditional main street developments I've ever seen in terms of respecting the scale of the surrounding area. It's ridiculous how impossible it is to satisfy the area residents.

Height and traffic concerns would be the usual neighbours' complaints.

The way that those particular blocks of Euclid and Aylmer have been student-ghettoized with 20-bedroom units, you'd think the local NIMBY hoarde would be looking for a little gentrification through a boring architectural condo box thingy...

It's absolutely LAUGHABLE that THIS would be allowed on the side street literally three lots away, and yet someone would fight a redevelopment of a mostly-parking-lot-lot fronting on Bank Street:
