What is the heck is going on with that project thats beside the High Tea Bakery on Portage Avenue? I understand they had some issues with unsafe demolition practices, and seem to corrected them (enough) to get the building mostly demolished. Now, there is a piece of heavy machinery parked on site... and it hasn't moved for at least a couple months. What is this "hotel" the owner wants to build? Who is this guy? Has he built anything else in the city?

btw the new U of M athletic centre is slated to open in 2015... probably fall.

It will be the new home for the Department of Family Services. The addition will have a new elevator and about 8,000 sq ft of space.

....all I know is this owner has plans to build a 5 storey hotel. I have not heard about the brand. The zoning for the property accepts this use so as long as he keeps it within the guidelines he can build.

The Shark Club jersey thing might have to do with dress code and type of crowd. When I worked in a bar at various times we did not allow any FUBU or ECHO clothing, hoodies, bandanas etc.

I would have to think that TN management, when implementing the no jersey policy must not have been thinking Jets/Bombers, because that's utterly moronic if true.

To be honest, for a club claiming to be a Sports Bar, disallowing any jerseys is rather stupid.

Seasons Of Tuxedo Update.
Nothing that most here don't already know but a quick update that everyone has probably read in the WFP already.

Maybe post the Fatburger opening date (August 8th) in the restaurants section... also relevant for that section would be the mention of two 'family-friendly sit-down restaurants' which scream IHOP-type places. Maybe John Dobbin's refuted site diagram showing IHOP etc. is actually true.
Another Coras would be fine too... the place is always a zoo when I try to go.

What ever happened to this proposal? Sure looks a hell of a lot better than some crumbling antique store that's currently there now!

The Saddlery Lofts... what a blast from the past. That must be about 8 or 9 years old.

After a meagre attempt at sales, the whole project just sort of faded away. It predates the current generation of downtown condo construction, so it would have been a pretty unusual and bold project by the standards of that time. I don't recall who the developer was, but I do remember the design was roundly criticized around here (even though the idea of a residential development there was pretty popular). Of course, had it been built I'm sure it would have ended up looking a lot different, probably with some healthy dollops of stucco as was common practice then.

With the new Project W going up on the next block and the other developments in the area, I would think that site could be developed with something better than that now.

Yeah. It was an old post (construction 2). It's saddening because that could have been build, or something similar, instead of the still standing decrepit one story Antique shop.
You may be right about the new project slated just south. If I remember correctly (it was in the news a while ago), the province was to buy out the Woodbine as one of the many downtown hotels they want to shut down. Dunno if that's a "no touch" heritage building though, or if they can tear that whole block down beside Fox and Fiddle. ???

No thanks. That's one of the better functioning blocks on Main with lots of foot traffic due to all the businesses, including the Woodbine.

Pretty sure there's a bunch of parking lots in the east exchange to take care of first.

That stretch of Main Street is completely filled with business... Why would you want to tear it down.

Oooh, because it worked so well for the Trizak building... I think TV might have something to say about that

What, you don't like the 'capped-off-never-built-second-tower-and-podium' motif?

For what it's worth, the Saddlery Lofts only involved replacing one building... just the current badly neglected Antiques & Funk. It would have gone on top of the building that houses Parlour Coffee and it would have also swallowed up the vacant lot behind it. It would have been a big net gain for the block in terms of density, without really having an impact on the rest of the block... I certainly wouldn't compare it to Trizec.

With Cora's existing location on Waverly just north of Wilkes a location in Seasons of Tuxedo seems questionable unless they are relocating.

With the whole "first to the Winnipeg market" TGI Friday's and Chillis both seem like much more likely choices to be joining IHOP. Mr Mikes has also publically states expression in the Winnipeg market and has yet to formally announce a location but would otherwise fit the description.

awesome, thanks Jamie. has anyone heard anything regarding phase 2 of Fairchild Lofts (I remember hearing something about more information being announced this summer)? has it been put on hold because of the glut of condos on the market?
