Disagree. The most iconic logos in pro sports are symbols not animals that have nothing to do with the team name. (Yankees, Montreal Canadiens, Notre Dame University etc. In fact, the most iconic sport brands on planet earth are symbols.

Vancouver's jerseys on the other hand have historically ranked at or near the bottom in terms of popularity. (all versions of them)

I like the idea of the Millionaires logo. (or a modernized version of it) Its simple, multidimensional, and has history behind it. Guess that's why the Canucks bought the rights to it.

Agree about the Stealth nickname LOL Doesn't exactly strike fear in opponents.
Nope, it's from the Yanks - much like how "Yank" comes from the Brits.

Hmm, the orca logo is popular enough for Seattle to steal it.
Fair point, but the teams that still use letters were there when the leagues were created. Unlike Vancouver, those logos have a century's worth of heritage and a couple of trophies behind them; our city goes out wearing the Millionaires jersey (or worse, that Johnny Canuck one), we just end up looking like the Blue Jackets.

Could be worse - take the Oakland Athletics or the Mighty Ducks... or the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly. We ever get a team name like that, the franchise'll evaporate faster than the Grizzlies.

.
In parts of New England where there are lots of Franco-Americans (whose ancestors migrated from Quebec and New Brunswick), some people still see the word "Canuck" as a racial slur.

Wow, had never seen that piece regarding the history of the term. Thanks for the link.

Nice find regarding the Seawolves (and it is a definite ripoff) but I wouldn't exactly call "Major League Rugby" a major sports league and I sure as heck wouldn't be looking to follow their business model in any way shape or form.

Regarding symbols for teams, there are tons of examples of teams who used letters or symbols for their logos who came in way after their leagues started (like close to 100 years later), so that's not a problem.

There is over a century worth of hockey history in this city, with a large portion of it with a team having a letter or symbol as their logo. Its not like its some new sport here that needs all the help it can get to get over. The Millionaires jersey looks nothing like the BlueJackets, and any variation of colors and styles could be employed to give it a modern, unique look. Again, we're a mature hockey market with deep long history. Columbus does not.

Threw me for a loop too. I always thought a canuck was a kind of albatross.

Ha! Yes indeed, rugby is nowhere close to having a major league. Just pointing out that while some people find the orca butt-ugly, others find it iconic/pleasing enough to plagiarize.

I'll concede the letters, but it's much easier for the "new" teams. The Flames set their C on fire, the Devils gave their J a spade tail... how the hell do you represent a Canuck, much less with a C or V? Case in point here - #2 and #4 look like logos for craft beer rather than Vancouver hockey. It's the beaver, First Nations and whale fin logos that have any kind of symbolism or brand potential.
