Pro Lacrosse Back in Vancouver (sort of)

The National Lacrosse League added a fourth Canadian franchise on Thursday by giving unanimous approval to a plan for the Washington Stealth to relocate to the Vancouver area.
The Vancouver Stealth will play at the Langley Events Centre starting in the 2014 NLL season, the league said in a statement.

The Toronto Rock, Calgary Roughnecks and Edmonton Rush are the other Canadian franchises in the nine-team league. Details on the Vancouver Stealth's ticket pricing, season tickets, sponsorships and other plans are expected to be released next week

LEC can only hold roughly 5k. That's not a lot of fans that can come through those doors, and I wonder if the team will eventually move to the Vancouver proper area. It only makes sense for the club to do that eventually. I wonder how many fans from the Vancouver area actually will attend the games....they'll get a lot of people from Langley, but what about the people from Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, New West, etc?

Yeah. I'd be surprised too, but I wish them the best, and hope that this time around, they can do better. Hopefully, they can fill the LEC. I'm not going to be traveling all the way to Langley to watch the NLL, but if they ever make a move to Vancouver area, I'd be willing to go and watch, or if they're showing the games on TV. maybe. just maybe. but attending the games physically. Too far. Good for the residents of Langley, though!

Would be great if they could put it in surrey city centre, thereby keeping the costs down, but still being skytrain accessable to be able to draw from the north of the Fraser crowd.

Good for the city either way though.

I agree. I think having the NLL back in BC is good. Just hope that they'll be able to draw more people than just the Langley area. Might as well call it the Langley Stealth.

The newly rebranded Vancouver Warriors is scheduled to begin play in Dec at Rogers Arena (if the season does in fact start on time).

Is there a need for absolutely everything that sports related in this town (except the Lions, Canadians, and Whitecaps) needs an aboriginal theme somewhere within their structure?

The Canucks' orca is a perfect symbol of Vancouver.

Why wouldn't it start on time? The NLL has been very stable the past few years.

The owners have threatened to lock out the players if a deal isn't reached by the time training camp starts

No it’s not. It’s weird, it’s a corporate logo, and it has nothing to do with a Canuck. The logo is supposed to to reflect the team which it does not. So it’s a fail.

And actually no, the Grizzlies had an aboriginal theme too so the 2 biggest sports franchises in this city’s history share that. Add that to this lacrosse team so that’s 3 sport properties that have the same theme.

Even now it’s almost 50% if teams who have that theme.

You don’t have to have an animal or a person. Lots of teams have symbols.
But if you do decide to go the animals/human route, it better be relevant and it better not suck which the orca is not, and it does respectively.

The orca represents the PNW, and it and the wave assume the shape of a C. Unlike the stupid Hoser or "hockey stick on a rectangle" logos, that's pretty symbolic. A plain letter "C" is already taken (twice in the NHL alone), and so is the maple leaf; I for one do not want an igloo or maple syrup bottle on the jerseys.

So you don't like it because it's an animal, or because it borrows a limited amount of styling from aboriginal art?

I think it's a great logo with the new color scheme the team has had in recent years, and the throwback skate/rink and Johnny Canuck are nice as optional logos on 3rd jerseys.

Don't like it because its a corporate logo. If the team were called the Orcas (a name that was thrown around for our NBA team) or the Whalers, I'm down for it. But since its not, ya, not so much.

But the team is not called the PNW Canaucks or the Vancouver Whales. It actually came from the corporate entity that owned the team at the time (Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment) so that's a no-go right off the bat.

And you don't need a "C". It could be a V and a C or any combination thereof with or without a C for that matter. A Maple Leaf an igloo, or a maple syrup bottle are just as bad because as with the whale; they have nothing to do with a Canuck.

Exactly what does have to do with a Canuck? It's American slang for "Canadian" - the team is called the Vancouver Stereotypes, and again, there's no dignified logo to represent that.

IMO, Canucks S&E's former name works just fine; Vancouver has affiliated itself with whales/wildlife and First Nations culture for as long as most of us can remember, and the logo's definitely more iconic than a generic letter, a stick on a rink (thanks for the correction), an orange hockey skate or a speeding Hoser lumberjack. Or we could always go back to Millionaires, in honour of the real estate industry...

Back to the Warriors: one, it could mean any kind of fighter/soldier through history, and two, it beats the crap out of Stealth. "We are the sneakiest, rah rah rah!"

The Canuck team name did not originate as an American slang. The term originated in Canada well over 100 years ago.

Disagree. The most iconic logos in pro sports are symbols not animals that have nothing to do with the team name. (Yankees, Montreal Canadiens, Notre Dame University etc. In fact, the most iconic sport brands on planet earth are symbols.

Vancouver's jerseys on the other hand have historically ranked at or near the bottom in terms of popularity. (all versions of them)

I like the idea of the Millionaires logo. (or a modernized version of it) Its simple, multidimensional, and has history behind it. Guess that's why the Canucks bought the rights to it.

Agree about the Stealth nickname LOL Doesn't exactly strike fear in opponents.
