If you wanna piss off 2 million Pittsburghers... suggest demolishing a downtown parking garage... I tremble at the thought of such outrage

I walk by this every day. For a while it seemed to be moving at an excruciating pace, but the past two weeks or so it seems as though they've finally stepped on the gas pedal. It's moving pretty quickly now. I'm assuming they had a lot of underground site prep.

Glad to see da'burgh on the move!! Although it has been 4 years since I have been there, they really need to do something with the downtown core. This is a step in the right direction, and having the Fairmount Hotel in town will help boost the city's image.

we all know that 3 PNC will be 23 stories... but I've long been frustrated by the absence of information on its structural height in feet or meters. I assumed based on the number of floors that it would be just around 300 feet tall. There are a lot of variables... such as "green" construction, mixed uses (residential, hotel, office, etc)... so it's hard to project.

However, SkyscraperPage says 3 PNC will have a structural height of 110.0 meters.. which works out to approximately 360 feet. I suppose this isn't too far-fetched considering the 23-story Westinghouse Building, an office tower built in 1970, is 108 meters.

http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=52892

SkyscraperPage reports there will be 213 units/rooms. The hotel is 185 rooms and there are 28 condos.

Now that the structural steel is above ground, the building will rise fairly quickly. Looks like they have allready started the steel for the second floor and the elevator shafts/core are around the 6th floor in my rough estimation.

Yes, they are being rehabbed into apartments, retail and a YMCA.

Law firm gets OK for lighted sign atop new office tower

Tuesday, January 29, 2008
By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Reed Smith will add its name to the city skyline when it moves into the new PNC skyscraper in 2009.

The city Planning Commission today gave approval for the law firm to put its name at the top of the 23-story Three PNC Plaza building under construction on Fifth Avenue, Downtown.

Reed Smith will put its name in red letters on the skyscraper's north and south facades, where it will be visible from the Fort Pitt Bridge, PNC Park, Station Square and other locations.

Reed Smith is just one of several firms to receive approval to add their names to buildings. UPMC will be putting its name on the U.S. Steel Tower this year. Huntington Bank and the K & L Gates law firm also have won approval to put their names in lights on buildings Downtown.

When I was looking at this picture taken by Flash, I realized that 3 PNC Plaza is gonna fill a nice gap in the skyline from the northside angle. Notice the construction crane in place in the middle:

So I very sloppily cut and pasted the rendering of 3 PNC to the approximate height and width that I think it will be from this side:

[EDIT: Adjusted in height a bit, after talking to Evergrey about it]

That's pretty sweet!

Three PNC is going to help feel like your going down some kind of gauntlet on Liberty Avenue, which allready has an abundunce of skyscrapers. Of course it would be nice if it was higher. It is a rather wide building by highrise standards is it not? I figure PNC wanted to use that whole parcel of land, but too bad that they didn't decide to use some of the construction materials to build more vertically and less horizontally. Nonetheless it is still going to be a good looking building.

at 360 ft, 3 PNC should be similar in height to Federated, Westinghouse and Oliver

Oliver, which is 347 ft., is visible at the far left in front of the Citizens Bank building in Flash's photo... so 3 PNC will be a little bit taller than that

...

I like the term "gauntlet", Gilamonster

3 PNC is a wide building... it has 752,000 sq. ft.... which to put it into perspective... it about 75% the size of the 975 ft. tall Comcast Tower that's nearing completion in Philadelphia
