Site contamination delays affordable housing project
The discovery of soil and groundwater contamination at the site of a 26-unit modular housing development on Colborne Street West has delayed the project.

In February 2021, city council approved construction of a $5.5-million building at 177 Colborne St. West – on vacant land owned by the city — to help address the significant need for more affordable housing for older adults.
The four-storey building will include 26 studio-sized units about 320 square feet in size and main floor commercial space.
In a report coming to the city’s social services committee on Wednesday, Marlene Miranda, Brantford’s general manager of community services and social development, said both soil and groundwater contamination were discovered during site preparation.
“While the soil contamination has been remediated, it is a more complex path to resolve the groundwater contamination,” said the report.
The project, which is to be partially funded by a $1.25-million capital grant from the province’s Social Services Relief Fund, came with the expectation the building would be completed by Dec. 31, 2021. An extension of that timeline to Dec. 31, 2022 has been approved...
