When these four buildings were first announced, I was very worried that they would never become as iconic as the Twin Towers. Yet, as I study them more, I realize that individually they seem rather weak, but like the Twin Towers, they are a sort of package deal that really strike you when they are all seen together.

Anyway, its absolutely great to see the Freedom Tower above ground (sort of)! Finally New York's skyline will grow back better than before!

Yeah, the Winter Garden pavilion at the World Financial Center. It was heavily damaged during the attacks, too, and the original grove of 50 foot tall palm trees it shelters died. All has been restored.

People often forget what a mess Downtown was beyond ground zero after 9/11. All of the surrounding buildings were damaged, it look like a war zone. However, the first rebuilding was of those surrounding towers, the first trickling of a returning vitality to the area. That was simultaneous with the 6 month ground zero cleanup, later followed by the return of 1 & 9 service through the site to the SI ferry, and later still by restored PATH service. These were all individual steps that played a role in bringing Downtown back. The most important step is the return of the WTC office space, which we are now on our way to seeing.

They way they look alone. What I'm saying is when you look at say, Tower 2 by itself, it doesn't really look incredibly striking, but when you put it with the other 3 buildings, it could damn near knock you down in amazement. I was speaking relatively of course, with what I said earlier. All of the towers are very nice by themselves. In short: The grouping of towers increases the beauty factor exponentially.

This might be slightly off-topic, but what happened to that building near the WTC that was damaged on 9/11 and had to be disassembled. Did that ever happen?

It is happening. Last time I was at the site (maybe two months ago) it looked to be a good 20 floors tall.

The state and city have a plan, but the city hasn't agreed to its share yet. Here you can see it still standing on the right.

Great shot of the progress with Donnie Wahlberg! One can easily see the progress of Tower 1...

BTW, it is really hard to believe that after all these years that ramp is finally coming out!!!

A little more from today's Times

A breakthrough may be on the horizon, however. An announcement is expected on Thursday morning whose magnitude can probably be gauged from the fact that no one involved — not the mayor’s office, not the Assembly speaker’s office, not the City University of New York, not the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York — would talk about Fiterman Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

I've been watching that scaffolding for ages along the tub wall and I noticed large sections coming down over the past week (but I've been fooled in the past to thinking it was coming down). If they really are finished with that wall, finally, and get that ramp out, then hopefully there will be rapid progress on building out the memorial as that one corner, where they've had space to work, actually went up fairly quickly and extensively. At least I can hope.
