I just have to Second all that!
Canada, especially its cities, has advanced an incredible amount in just the last few decades. Urban fabric/character, food, transport, culture, and a ton of other things. AND - improving all the time. I don't think we have one city over 500,000 (+many smaller) that hasn't been transformed for the better. Of course, some more than others, and all still have room to become better, but we have come far since 1990, 1980 . . .
I think Vancouver is better a couple times over. I can remember a time, not counting nature's contribution, when Vancouver was dull (really dull): a place where there was little good food, clothing and art; the economy was too simple, limited and tied to boom/bust cycles; the city had a lot of old industrial land (esp. downtown), surface parking, poor limited transit, lack of parks & seawall (yep, Stanley was there, but much else wasn't), the built environment was 'crude' and incomplete, and felt incomplete; the word dynamic did not properly apply. It is truly shocking to realize what has developed in its recent history.
It's time to take the next step - the quality of our architecture needs to rise across the board.
