I'm hearing rumblings about a fairly large scale senior or medical facility project coming up in Regina, rumors are that it is in the $260-$300 Million Range. Any idea what this could be?

There is a good sized seniors complex planned for the corner of 5th Ave N between Broad and Hamilton where the Lutheran Care Home and Zion United Church currently stand. It's supposed to be a 300 long term bed facility so it may be in the 200 million dollar range.

Going back to this story from April, 13 Leopold currently has all of the trees adjacent to the property marked for removal. Step 1 in preparation for demolition?

Is this breaking ground or a funding announcement? They haven't broken ground yet on the Plains II, the out-patient centre which is supposed to be north of the old Plains/SIAST building.

The contractor mentioned for me to contact is outside of the three contractors that made it past the RFQ phase of Eden Care, so I am confused which project this is. I'll make a few more calls and see what can dig up.

I can't see Eden Care being in the $260-300-million-dollar range --- unless it has a pile of medical equipment included in the price tag.

Kinda had no choice... Investers were actually refusing to lend Saskatchewan any money... Drastic measures had to be taken.

The federal government had a similar problem in the 90s too.

Stadium project boosts provincial permits in July
REGINA — Building permits in Saskatchewan took a big jump in July, up nearly 60 per cent over June (seasonally adjusted), the highest percentage increase among the provinces, according to data released by Statistics Canada Wednesday.

The total value for building permits was $336 million, the highest ever for the month of July, thanks largely to a $100-million building permit issued to PCL Construction for the Mosaic Stadium project in Regina.

Building permits increased 25 per cent from $268.1 million in July 2014, ranking Saskatchewan second among the provinces in terms of percentage increase on a year-over-year basis.

Saskatchewan also saw the largest gain in the non-residential construction sector, with $239.7 million in building permits, up 89 per cent from $126.8 million in July 2014. Seasonally adjusted non-residential permits also increased by 132 per cent between June and July.

“The rise in non-residential permits is very positive,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said in a press release Wednesday. “It shows that larger construction projects are moving ahead, creating jobs and providing opportunities for local businesses.”

Regina has a number of large-scale projects underway this year, including the City of Regina’s waste-water treatment plant, which has been issued $37 million in building permits this year.

Housing starts in Regina up 20% in August, CMHC

“Regina’s total housing starts are expected to end the year lower than in 2014, as weaker economic conditions and elevated inventories of new homes continue to add downward pressure to new construction over the remaining months of 2015,” said Lai Sing Louie, CMHC’s regional economist for the Prairies and Territories.

But Stu Niebergall, CEO of the Regina and Region Home Builders’ Association, noted that this year’s housing construction activity is very close to the long-term average.

“We are still tracking towards plus 1,500 housing starts for the year, which is below the five-year average, but only slightly below the 10-year average. Although we are seeing less velocity in the new home market and some head winds as a result of provincial and national economies, we still have a healthy and robust new housing market,” Niebergall added.

By contrast, in Saskatoon, the number of total starts dropped sharply in August to 148 in August, down 66 per cent from 434 total starts in August 2014. Once again, unlike Regina, multiples saw the biggest drop, plummeting 85 per cent to 52 from 251 in August 2014.

Saskatoon’s total starts of 1,487 to the end of August are down nearly 38 per cent from 2,386 during the first eight months of 2014. Multiples are running about 40 per cent behind last year’s pace at 798, compared with 1,315 during the same period last year, while singles are down about 36 per cent to 689 from 1,071 for the same period last year.

Those new schools can't come quick enough. Schools in Regina are bursting at the seams. Campbell hired 3 more grade 9 teachers last week. WS Hawrylak is trying to hire another to create another class to reduce class size in a couple of classrooms. WF Ready is in the process of converting their mini gym into learning space bc they need to bring in another teacher as well.

I know current enrollment at Milliken is 410, including 40 Kindergartners. The fire capacity for their gym is capped at 295 people so they've been having to do half the school at a time for assemblies. They've had to add two more portable classrooms to meet demand, on top of the 5 portables they already have. This is just getting outrageous.

I've also noticed Deshaye and Perry have had to add a large number of portables for this school year. Regina's schools are looking more and more like an interconnected grid of trailers where you can barely tell where the original building was.

I think the only South school surviving this portable classroom gong show is Grant Road which was luckily built with the future in mind and has enough classrooms to handle the influx of kids, although I've heard they're over 450 students enrolled now and it's getting ridiculous in there with teacher-student ratios.

Pretty ridiculous that Harbour Landing will probably have 15,000 people before they have a school ready. Contrast that with Coopertown that may have a school before the first house is occupied.
