Pretty expected to be honest, but yes, it would have been an amazing standalone in ICE and could have drawn some serious traffic. Alas.

What is the future of downtown retail? This is the inspiration behind the much-anticipated second annual Edmonton Downtown Business Association's 'Imagining Downtown' luncheon.

Be the first to hear the results of the Edmonton Downtown Retail Vacancy Study and hear from different thought leaders and subject matter experts about what’s possible for Edmonton's downtown and downtowns across Canada and inspiration for the path ahead.

Imagining Downtown: Restoring Retail will also announce six new retailers opening downtown as part of the EDBA's Retail Attraction Program.

Date: October 12, 2023
Time: 11 AM
Location: The Westin Hotel

Damn, I forgot about Dollarama! Downtown could definitely use at least a couple more.

The Knothole Gang for sure. Just need a large and loving Edmonton/Alberta business to support that.

That was a certain section at Commonwealth right? Or was it something else?

Was all over DT this morning and was happy to see how busy it was. The MacEwan/Norquest block party on 108 st. is going on, Rice Howard Way was full of people out and about while the patios prepared for the lunch crowd and Jasper at 100 st. was full of kids from Centre High getting out for their lunch break. Lots of people out at local coffee shops, the bus stops were all busy, 104 and 109 is just crazy busy with pedestrian activity from MacEwan, workers from the various construction sites (Parks, Edward, Mercury Block, Station Lands) grabbing coffees and sitting on benches. I see all this and have a hard time believing that a retailer like Uniqlo, H & M or Simons wouldn't be successful taking a chance on a beautiful, street-fronted downtown store. I imagine students from the schools would love an affordable place to stop in and shop before/after classes. I'm sure downtown workers would be thrilled to have a place to be able to pick up a quick outfit change when they spill their coffee or have an unexpected meeting or invite to an Oilers game. I just don't buy that there aren't enough people to support retail, they just need somewhere worthy to go.

Or maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

The fact of the matter is, retailers open brick and mortar locations based on extensive research; and it's clear they're research shows DT is a no go zone. Why take the risk?

I was DT with a client this week, and we spent half the conservation talking about all the social disorder. He's from another major city and said our core felt dirty, rough and sad looking. le sigh

I was downtown this week and walked around a bit. It was sad. Stores closed. Pedestrian traffic a tenth of what it was 5 years ago. EMS drove right by me as a person was in need of assistance. There is talk of 6 new Stores opening. That's nothing considering the amount of empty spaces.

I’ve travelled in the downtowns of four major Canadian cities in the last year, through work and personal. This is not just an Edmonton phenomenon

I'm downtown several times a week and yeah pedestrian traffic is down but that's not just an Edmonton issue. WFH has dropped foot traffic in all downtowns, especially the larger cities where commuting downtown is a hassle. Your EMS comment is stupid as you're making an assumption that the emergency was related to something 'self-inflicted'....f*ck off, like really.

^ I was walking west on 104 towards the casino and a street person was against the fence appearing to be drunk or drugged ready to collapse. At the exact same time I approached this person EMS showed up and provided assistance. I know what I saw

^ good response! what's with the cheerleaders? our DT has declined, dramatically, and no, other cities are doing a much better job. full stop. there's activity, there's people, there's retail. we should all be demanding better! the way i see it, it won't be until the 2040's at least, until there is any hope of dt progressing.
