Beyond aesthetics, I don't think London's design is really that problematic. The issue is really the lack of proper infrastructure in the area for both pedestrians and automobiles. This is really the city dropping the ball more than the developer. It really doesn't make sense to improve any of the pedestrian links, other than the bridge which should at least help London's residents reach the station, when the city is still planning to rip it all up for an interchange.

The planned interchange actually looks like something that would solve most of the current issues. The level LRT/freight rail crossing on Heritage probably should have been addressed when the C-Train was first built and is definitely required today. The traffic circle design should solve a lot of the issues from Horton Road's right in right out access to Heritage; access to north bound Macleod during times of congestion is currently problematic and the ability to use the circle to reach westbound Heritage. The only problem I have with it are the detours the plan seems to require for pedestrians on Heritage to cross Macleod. Beyond that, it should allow the rest of the station area to develop without causing issues. The city really should have built it, or cancelled the plans and at least put some proper sidewalks in, prior to allowing much development in the area.

Here are the city's plans: http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation/TP/...e-Drive---Macleod-Trail-Interchange.aspx

And yet another fatality this morning, also on the NE line.

Calgary Transit will soon show another sign it is awaking from its technological stagnation, with real-time C-Train arrival information likely on display at platforms in the coming weeks.

It comes a little later than scheduled (screens had advertised a start date of August), but the system is in place and testing just needs to be completed, according to a transit spokeswoman.

Check out the first TransitCamp blog post in a series for 2011/2012. I think this could start some good discussion. Posts will try to be weekly.

Question for my fellow YYC twitter users. Are you tired of seeing all the bitching people do on there about transit, and specifically the usually passive-aggressive or just downright dickish way they interact with the Calgary Transit twitter account?

Or is this simply just the next step in people complaining about transit?

I contrast those tweets to some of our fellow forumers on there like srperry that tweets them with useful information and polite helpful suggestions.

Yeah, noticed that many on twitter can be quite agressive. Srperry, Frink and even Nenshi are good at stepping in and offering positive feedback.

I'd say more than 40% of all #yyc tweets are passive agressive. Speaking of Twitter and Calgary Transit, it looks like the C-train has run over someone again. When will people learn that the train usually wins.

Yeah that is crazy, 3 fatalities in about 3 weeks or so I believe. The LRT is becoming the Darwin machine for the city.

That just seems like Twitter to me. It's the equivalent of news website comment sections - sure there's the odd good comment, but mostly it's just losers whining.

Not even three weeks, it's only a week and a half.

Aug 30, man killed at 39th Ave crossing.

Sept 4, 5 days later, man killed at 32nd Ave crossing, 2 crossings south of last one.

Sept 9, 5 days later, man killed at 20th Ave crossing, 2 crossings south of last one.

People should take extra care crossing the tracks on Sept 14, but I'm not sure which crossing they should be watching out for. 2 crossings south is at 16th Ave, but there's no pedestrian crossing there. 2 pedestrian crossings south is at 8th Ave/Marlborough Drive.

I try. But it is frustrating to counter the assoholic behaviour on Twitter by some. Yeah there are problems, but being a prick doesn't help.

Plus on the Sept 4th later that same day a blind man fell under the train, but was lightly injured or uninjured.

I'm a little curious about your "BRT310" route, running down 22X. I know the city was looking at a plan for servicing the future Providence development with a BRT down 162 Ave. So would we be looking at two lines given this plan?

Assuming that your BRT plan would either take the ramp off of 22X onto Macleod Trail and then turn left onto 162nd (which would take it past Shawville Blvd) or keep going to 6 Street SW and head back east onto Shawville Gate. In either case, it might be worth looking into having a BRT head north from Shawville Gate on 6 Street SW and then continue heading west on 162 Ave.

Also to note that there are two points of heavy vehicle traffic that any bus would hit on a route coming off of 22X onto Macleod: 1) the intersection at 162nd and Macleod, 2) the intersection at 162nd and Shawville Blvd.

To put it into a quick picture, here's what I see as the primary options and their sub-options.

(keeping in mind that there are bus drop-offs on both Shawville Way and Shawville Gate for Somerset-Bridlewood)

22X<-->Macleod Trail<-->162 Ave<-->Shawville Blvd<-->Shawville Gate<-->6 Street<-->162 Ave
Shawville Blvd<-->Shawville Link<-->Shawville Way<-->162 Ave
Shawville Blvd<-->Shawville Link<-->Shawville Gate<-->6 Street<-->162 Ave
162 Ave<-->Shawville Way<-->Shawville Link<-->Shawville Gate<-->6 Street<-->162 Ave

22X<-->6 Street<-->Shawville Gate<-->Shawville Blvd<-->162 Ave
Shawville Gate<-->Shawville Link<-->Shawville Blvd<-->162 Ave
Shawville Gate<-->Shawville Link<-->Shawville Way<-->162 Ave

Regarding the two routes, this could definitely be extended down 162nd into the future growth in Providence there as well as Evergreen etc. Really, I just didn't have room on the map because of the legend.

Regarding the alignment I would definitely go with your option 2, using 6th street rather than Macleod. There really isn't any point on using Macleod as this BRT would essentially be a two stop deal. The whole point of it is to connect riders on the south line (and maybe even the north line depending on the desire to transfer downtown or not) to the south hospital. It is simply a way for riders in the south to avoid going into downtown just to transfer to the SE line, or alternatively traveling to heritage and then transfering to the BRT there to South hill and transferring again. Basically a route that reduces transfers for those destined for the South Hospital. You may also see some reverse traffic for those living on the SE line to get on the South line if they work in any of the offices close to the SE. But this is a topic for a whole blog post.

Ideally I would use the 6th street/shawville way route, but put in dedicated lanes, or at least queue jumps and have a transit controlled signalized intersection. Getting on and off 22x would be the tricky part, as well as having dedicated lanes there as well. There are no other options.
