So I believe I was hit with a bolt of genius lightning last night, when I suggested on Twitter that the new transit smart card should have been named "Leeloo Dallas Multipass" (or just Multipass). How did we let such an awesome name slip through our fingers?

If you can get Mila Jovovich to come to Calgary for the "premiere" of the new multipass, that would be sick!

And I have been doing a little research, and came across this Calgary Herald from 1966. It talks about 7th avenue being used as a transit-only road, above ground or below. The whole front and second page is full of old development plans for Calgary. Worth a look, I think!

Back on the subject of crosstown routes, for a bit:

A connection between Lions Park/Banff Trail and Westbrook/Shaganappi Point. It occurred to me today, while trying to travel from Lions Park to 17th Ave, that if the 414 was converted into a non-shuttle, relatively frequent service (~every 20 min), and didn't stop running at 6:30 pm and odd times.... that it would make a very good crosstown route. From the north, it hits the Northmount-14th corner, Lions Park/SAIT, Kensington, Sunalta Station (or close enough), 17th Ave, and could be extended to Marda Loop. Just a thought.

I was driving west on Crowchild by the Stoney Trail interchange, and I noticed that they are doing a lot of work in the median, as if they were building the LRT. I was under the impression that the Rocky Ridge LRT extension was delayed.. or is it going ahead?

I mentioned on the last page that the tender for the civil works is out. Shouldn't be work happening on it yet, but it might start this fall, perhaps only next spring.

I was speaking with a couple of staff from CT route planning dept a few years ago, and at that time they were hoping someday to extend the 91 (currnetly runs Brentwood-Lions Park via Childrens & Foothills) from Lions Park to at least 17 Ave, and replace the 414 on that segment. Don't have a clue if that's still on the drawing board.

Well some of the infrastructure work has been ongoing for months now in the median, between the station location and the Stoney bridge they've excavated it out, done some work with the utilities and then backfilled and packed the ground to the point it almost looks like its ready for trackbed construction. Similar work was done on the east side of Stoney early this year too.

From what I have been seeing on my morning commute, the current work is in relation to getting Crowchild trail onto its final allignment. There will be another lane on the inside EB direction.m WB direction needs a lot more substantial roadwork to get onto the final allignment. The excavation appeared to the addition of storm sewers for the final inside lane. Only other additional work on the trackbed area would be to remove the topsoil and level the area.

So are we still getting real time information in August? There is only 5 days left. I did notice they don't flash that we are on the displays at the stations any longer. Now it only shows the time and date.

Now CT is saying late September. Still working out the bugs.

Tons of work happening in the NW this weekend, the new platform extension at Brentwood is being installed, caternary work in several places as well (northland centre track plus the Crowchild tunnel) and a few other things as well.

Seems the city got tired of waiting for Westcorp to build the +15 from London to Heritage Station, so they are initiating it by using the security deposit that Westcorp made to help pay for it, likely completion in 2012 or early 2013. See the story in the Herald

London (the project, not the city) has been a disappointing embarrassment for Calgary pretty much since day one. Possibly the worst imaginable TOD.

This bridge still leaves a 5 minute walk to the train. I can walk to transit in half that time from my lowly suburban detached house. Here's hoping Brentwood sets a much better example.

That's because it's really not. They forgot - or more likely didn't especially consider - the 'O' part - oriented. London is Transit Adjacent Development.

The full article outlines that the formal planning efforts toward the Station Area Plans was prompted in a significant way by the mistakes made with the London project.

Silver lining eh?

It just seems so odd that they planned a bridge to the station, but weren't required to actually build the damn thing. Should have been required before the first move-in.

But they were required to pay for it.

IMO, the the city should have made a prior to release condition the submission of a letter of credit to construct the bridge with the condition that the developer had to complete the bridge prior to the development completion permit. If the bridge wasn't built, the city would just take the money and do it themselves. Much to be learned from London.
