Kevin, I think that little red crane is at the construction site on 5th by the storage building. I think that's called "Pressler"?

They have started doing some work at Capstar but I don't think a crane is up yet.

Yeah that's for Pressler, I drove by it today. It's going to be interesting to see what they do down W. 5th and 6th to Mopac when it's all built out.

I think I answered my own question with regard to Spring...I simply was wrong about the picture. I think I do see a 13th floor now.

Thanks to all of you who let me know what is going on downtown.
Hi Brackenridge, and welcome to the forum. I haven't heard anything about the Marriott in a long time, either. I think the closest crane to the capitol is probably La Vista on Lavaca, which is on hold for the moment. There are lots of projects going on around campus, maybe that's what you are seeing. The biggest is 21 Rio.

Thanks for the response Priller. That is one of the projects I really want to see come to fruition.

It really is hard to tell from renderings what the final outcome will be. Many times they are made before the final drawings.... and then the model is made.
So, in this case Texboy said there has been very little exterior change (and he would know) so the model is probably rather close.

I know the model of the W has a better look than some of the renderings. One of the things that most folks don't like is the how generic (and white... as in the color) the parking area looks... but in the model it blends into the building.

It is all a process until the doors open!

I'm not a fan of the W design at all. Too blocky, sterile, and wide. They should have gone with a taller, skinnier design. Usually the renderings make buildings look better than what they turn out to be and if I don't like what the rendering looks like now I know I won't like the final product much either. Sorry if these sound like fightin' words.

I'm not really fond of the W either. Too bad, because the one here in Dallas is a really cool-looking building.

I like the building too. It will have an overwhelming appearance as you approach downtown from South 1st. It's hard to judge the final product from renderings. I thought the rendering of AMLI 2 looked like an ugly tenement building straight out of Chicago or NYC. But I love the appearance of that building, especially with the green lighting.

Renderings and pre-construction models are frequently different than the finished building. Sometimes the model is really different since they are produced before the final textures, colors and design are chosen. Sometimes the final touch changes the look of the building.

That said I hope the renderings and model of the W do not do it justice!

I was downtown last night around 360 and AMLI on 2nd, and I like the green glow from it. You wouldn't think it, but that green glow is really kind of relaxing actually.

I was also over by City Hall last night and two police cars came racing down Guadalupe Street. I went over to city hall and there was a fire truck and ambulance just rolling up. The news today said that a woman had crashed her car inside the garage.

Nice Frost Bank Tower aerial here:

I'm sure this has been asked before, so my apologies...
Is there somewhere that I could find a rendering of what they are going to do between Spring and Town Lake. There are two cranes in that area. Is there going to be a substantial building there? Or just parkland?

thanks

Phase I of the Gables Park Plaza will be the 8-floor apartment building on the left, Phase II will be around 18-floor condos.

Seeing how Spring is on a hill overlooking this area, and that the Spring residential units are 6th floor and up, I don't think either of these buildings are going to be in the way.

and not just that but the Hotel Valencia doesn't look half bad either maybe 13 stories. http://www.thedomainaustin.com/Hotels/Hotel-Valencia.aspx
and have to look at the virtual tour http://www.thedomainaustin.com/getdoc/11b6ee30-d53c-4b46-9bf1-0d095789ae8b/Virtual-Tour.aspx

Didn't Ben Wear (Statesman transportation writer) also crash his car in the CH garage? What is it with that place? Maybe it's so aestherically pleasing that people forget how to drive.

Got a chuckle out of this model. Note how the shadow of the condo tower crosses the apartment building. Makes those back apartments look appealing doesn't it>?
