I thought they weren't allowing these "4 1/2 but really 5 story-we'll just berm up around the base to make it look below grade" type buildings anymore ?

Quarters Hotel is a go?

That number could climb to $3 billion according to Jim Taylor the executive director of the Downtown Business Association in a presentation to city council's executive committee.

Taylor says a very small part will be confirmed with a hotel owned by a Sherwood Park developer, Prem Singhmar at the corner of 96th street and Jasper.

"Things like the hotel that's going to have its sod turning on Friday. When we started this report that wasn't a certainty and then it was pretty sure, and now they're turning the sod so that's $50 million so that's a small project in the case of some of the things that are happening."

Taylor expects the report, done by an MBA student in his office will compile 30 to 40 projects.

Hopefully the Quarters really cleans up quickly then, so that hotel guests get a good impression of things, instead of "what the heck have I just gotten myself into?".

2-3 billion is a reasonable estimate when you consider the arena is 450 mill plus, not to mention 50 mill for the hotel. Still plenty of other condos downtown moving ahead, and plenty of space surrounding the arena to be developed.

Think of all the cranes that will be positioned along 104 Ave. in about one or two year's time RE the RAM and Arena. Pleasant view no?

Has anyone heard news on when Westcorp. is planning on breaking ground for the Ultima? It should be started early if possible, considering their success.

They had the "official" ground breaking at the UCAMA site on Tuesday, and are breaking ground at the hotel site this morning at 10 am. ...pictures of the latter to follow.

Proposed freeze on subsidized housing ‘incredibly unproductive’: mayor

EDMONTON - Freezing subsidized housing developments in the inner city would be “a horrible mistake,” Mayor Stephen Mandel says.

A report submitted to city council’s executive committee Wednesday recommends a moratorium on funding or encouraging new subsidized housing projects in the Queen Mary Park, Alberta Avenue and Eastwood neighbourhoods for five years, and in the Central McDougall and McCauley neighbourhoods for 10 years.

The report, prepared by city administration and Nichols Applied Management, says 20 per cent of all subsidized housing in Edmonton is currently located in those neighbourhoods. The developments include any housing that receives a government subsidy, such as shelters or apartments for low-income tenants.

5yrs I can somewhat digest, 10 is ridiculous.... especially given that this is a zoning/use related issue at the root. I can appreciate and sympathize with Rob's comments, but am still not convinced that concentration is the real issue here and that the real concern lies in poor/outdated zoning/use classing that would provide more assurance and predictability to where these sites might be located.

Exactly. We need to be very careful with what names/uses/definitions we use at this point.

That said, I do feel as though the City and agencies can do a better job at spreading these applications out, to a degree. They need to be near transit, near nodes of basic employment, near supportive services and quite walkable in nature to amenities.

A very tough submit indeed and one that needs more thought, but a 10 year moratorium IS NOT the answer.
