Victoria doesn't have snow but it has lots of the other white stuff clogging streets and roads that cause traffic delays - seniors.

I would hate to see a Walmart in the downtown area, regardless of whether it is designed to fit within an urban fabric or not, but it could just be that I loathe that store. I could definitely get on board with a large grocery store with a similar design concept to that though...

And big thumbs up from me for the downtown theatre. Really wish we could get one of those back.

I agree but it would require a massive amount of basically free parking, or it will never be built. There has to be some sort of cross subsidization where a daytime office parkade is converted to evening and weekend parking for theatre goers. I am afraid it would likely be up to the City to provide some sort of parkade subsidy.

Or perhaps they could partner with an investor (perhaps even the city) when building, so that the theatre is built with multiple floors of underground parking below. It can be used by downtown workers during the day (for a fee), and then evenings and weekends for a fee as well, but perhaps it's waived with the purchase of a theatre ticket?

Saskatoon's downtown theatre has zero free parking accompanying it other than street parking after 6pm. It's really never been an issue.

I moved to Saskatoon about 7 years ago and that's one thing that is truly different between the two, the liveliness of the downtown in the evenings. Hopefully all the new restaurants/pubs in downtown Regina are proving that business can thrive there and a new theatre isn't too far away.

I moved to Saskatoon about 7 years ago and that's one thing that is truly different between the two, the liveliness of the downtown in the evenings. Hopefully all the new restaurants/pubs in downtown Regina are proving that business can thrive there and a new theatre isn't too far away.

It should also be noted that the downtown Saskatoon theatre recently tore up it's most lucrative parking for expansion.

2nd Avenue downtown on a Friday or Saturday evening is a lively place. I would love if Scarth Street could replicate that life.

I have been working downtown for many years. I can say with confidence that this summer is by far the liveliest I have seen downtown in the evenings and weekends, ever. I would say there must be 3 times the people downtown as there were just a few years ago.

New restaurants pubs and retail are part of the story but there are many more activities on the plaza and in the park that are also big contributors.

Last night Famoso still had new customers coming in for dinner after 10pm!

I have to agree. I don't live in Regina permanently anymore, but when I was back for a few days last month I definitely noticed a change in atmosphere when I was roaming about downtown.

The pubs & more unique/upscale restaurants are definitely drawing in people. The plaza was great with all the food trucks as well. The only thing that bugs me about the plaza is how it is a big wide open space with no shade. The tiling looks great but really heats up the space on a hot summer day. Not a big deal.

I think this comparison has gone stale given the recent renaissance in Regina's nightlife. Last Friday night, I walked the downtown 'circuit' of hot spots, starting at Victoria Ave & Scarth Street, heading north two blocks to 11th Ave, then south two blocks along Hamilton Street. I counted at least a dozen clubs, pubs, bars, and cafes, most of which have outdoor patios, and many of which are located in beautiful heritage buildings (e.g., Crave Wine Bar, Victoria's Tavern, Malt City Whiskey Bar, Beer Bros., Capitol Jazz Club). I was impressed with the flow of people along Victoria, Scarth, and Hamilton streets. I peeked into Malt City (in the gorgeous 1914 Canada Life building) and this will be exquisite when it opens. The new Hill Centre Famoso and the Capitol Jazz Club both have a great 'downtown' feel. Stepping out of the Capitol Jazz Club onto Hamilton Street, with its many lit-up office towers, is really neat. And of course all of this action feeds into the City Square Plaza, where a live band was playing to a small but packed beer garden.

This is hardly the downtown Regina of seven years ago.

I chuckled at that too. There are definitely criticisms of moving the planned location (foremost being that it's because the developer can't handle it...then why were they chosen for the new subdivision, and why are they allowed to continue in that position?), but having the convenience of your child being able to walk to school is an odd complaint.

Being able to walk or ride your bike to school in the summer is great.

It wasn't a criticism of walking. It was a criticism of having to cross Courtney Street which is going to be a very busy artery between the two subdivisions. The only problem with that argument is that it is going to suck for one set of kids. Pick the set and move on. It is not a reason to vote for or against the previous or the new location there are other reasons for that decision.

Well there will no doubt be crossing lights or even safety patrol.

Most schools are close to at least one major road.

Parents just love school buses. I know in my neighbourhood, families were sending their kids to a much farther away Catholic school just for the school bus service. The Public Schools realized this was happening and started busing younger kids from my street even though we are maybe 3 or 4 blocks from the public school.
