Yup, Vancouver should get away from the mentality that new buildings must "fit in with the neighbourhood character". These two buildings are prime examples how a neighbourhood is enhanced by structures that stand out.

Items that depart from the norm:

1. Building facades with far fewer balconies that stick out, or none at all.
2. Non-seafoam spandrels used.
3. Mall-type podiums with no townhomes.
4. Tinted glass windows.
5. Concrete pavers for walkways and sidewalks.
6. Tropical resort-style open air swimming pool.
7. Anchor commercial building: in this case a casino, 2 hotels and 8 restaurants.

Good update.

Unfortunately, the atrium space is not going to be as high as originally hoped.

Too bad there's no big skylight at the top of the atrium - but I guess that would eat up space on the ballroom levels and at the roof terrace.

You can see the façade is recessed where the Ellis-Don banner is located
- that'll be for the "peak" of the wave form above the entrance, which is at the same level as the alcove at the Expo Blvd corner.

So the level above the atrium is the ballroom level - note the terrace at the Expo Blvd corner:

Quote:
Meetings & Events

12 Event Rooms
56,717 sq ft of Total Event Space
1,799 Capacity of Largest Event Space
22 Maximum Breakout Rooms

• Unveiling Vancouver's Largest Hotel Ballroom 15,604 sf & 23 ft celiling
• 60,000 sf of flexible function space on one convenient level
• Breakout rooms with floor to ceiling views and state of the art audio visual
• Ideal for accommodating high-level meetings and elegant banquets.
• Welcoming groups in Summer 2017 up to 400 on peak
• Downtown Vancouver's luxury meetings destination

The separate steel structure at the back (stadium concourse side) must be to allow double height ceilings for the ballrooms in front of it:

Oh man that glass is sweet! I wonder how long before neighbours start compaining from it reflecting too much light. It looks like a brown-tinted mirror.

The developers didn't switch the glass colour to 'clear' with sea foam green spandrel at the last minute? Rejoice!

Looks nice so far.

Definitely reminds me of a piece of layered art glass.

As long as it's not 100% clear glass with seafoam green spandrel.

I think all the glass for this project is being staged from that empty lot next to Red Truck Beer's brewery on the False Creek Flats.

Glass does look incredible in person, problem is you'll never be able to see this building as shown in the renderings. It's literally feet from One Pacific so you'll only be able to get ample distance from it along Pacific Blvd..

The elevation depicted in the rendering above is completely blocked by One Pacific.

Yes agreed. This building would look even more amazing if the entrance fronts Pacific Boulevard. Too bad it's tucked into a corner like that. Plaza of Nations redevelopment can have lots of potential for amazing frontages.
