<.< The non-copper upper surfaces sure look like potential spandrel disasters to me.. I hope I'm just seeing things.

Yes, it's the first thing that caught my eye. They are suspiciously obscure and deemphasized. Great renders, though.

There will be likely spandrel, but they can save it if they will use very dark gray spandrel. Just don't ruin something this nice with the cheapest and most generic white/teal spandrel out there. I hope they would figure this themselves, these being really high-end hotels and all.

Here's how those steps turned out.

The last two pics are of the northeast corner of the casino site.

Note the 3 heavy columns to support the hotel tower above the concourse.

I just don't understand why a nice hotel and facility have to be squeezed into a corner adjacent to an existing and beautiful stadium, blocking it almost completely from certain vantage points, while prime lands in the neighbourhood are allowed for other less significant or social housing projects.

I could be mistaken, but wasn't the point of development in this location to help pay for the new stadium roof? Was the land not sold from the province to the casino developer? If so, there's your answer.

The land is being leased.

And of course the answer is the availability of development sites.
Given Vancouver's narrow street grid, there's probably only a handful of development sites in downtown Vancouver that can accommodate a large convention hotel (i.e. those where an alley has been closed, or those on the remaining undeveloped waterfront)

If so, there could be another piece of City or provincial land that could be sold to the Casino. This piece of land by the BC Place Stadium that many won't even consider developing could be used for social housing. The land was sold only because the Casino wouldn't be able to find anything else in Vancouver due to restrictions and protests of residents.

I haven't seen any signs that there's going to be a theatre that hosts live acts. This casino should at least match River Rock, as far as entertainment goes.

I don't think there is a theatre. Maybe with the failure of the Ford Centre, they decided that there was already enough theatre space downtown?

From the Site 10A website confirming it has met the conditions for the issuance of the Development Permit (seems to have quietly made it through the process):

Quote:
Development Permit

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

The City of Vancouver has issued a development permit for parq Vancouver’s new urban resort, at 39 Smithe Street, confirming that all prior conditions have been met including Social Policy, Urban Design, Planning and Engineering conditions. This is consistent with rezoning approval granted by Council in 2011.

We are excited to move forward to create a new urban entertainment resort that will dazzle our guests and make Vancouver proud when it opens in late 2016.

We look forward to sharing more details on our partners, design and décor, restaurants, programs and other details in the coming months on a new website currently in development. We are working to strike the perfect balance to reflect our spectacular natural local environment and the elegant glamour of world’s best resorts.

In the meantime, construction work will continue in compliance with the City’s relevant bylaws.

SO no staged construction here, looks like this one will move from parkade construction straight up to the structure itself.

Not a huge casino fan myself, but I'm certainly no fan of half finished construction projects, so I'm happy to see this one move forward.

When does the current lease expire again? Dec 2015 or 2016?
