hmmm, re: doctors offices, this is a couple blocks from the community clinic, and a quick google maps search shows about 20 in the downtown area. Granted some of these are definitely specialists and we definitely always need more GPs/Family Physicians, but there are more than a few of those around this area as well.

Maybe more a walk-in clinic is needed?

The one nearby to this Great West is the only general doc office downtown that i’m aware of - not a single walk in clinic. I assume docs don’t want to set up by the homeless shelter? Since covid I use Telus Health app and basically any prescription is mailed to me and I don’t have a family doctor since it’s impossible to have one downtown lol. We should almost have like a student run one or something for that purpose… no wonder the homeless are so angry if they can’t get walk in services downtown.

I think that’s more important than a grocery store downtown. I get all of my groceries delivered and that’s very common in most cities now. amazon subscribe and save is walmart prices, sometimes cheaper. Price for delivery via amazon or a local grocer isn’t an issue anymore. I’m talking, getting milk and paper towels delivered to my door cheaper than walmart prices via Amazon subscribe and save.

We’ve got the vet clinics, the grocery store brick and mortar is no more, time for docs downtown, and skywalks so I stop looking at mexico vacations during a pandemic haha.

There's no rich people next door to complain about the character of the neighbourhood, so hopefully we're in the clear.

Rich person concern - the sidewalk on this part of 2nd Ave is treacherous in the winter, so I hope that expands. To also make it feel more in tune with the neighborhood, they need to incorporate some greens and trees. It’s an exciting project, but where the heck are the trees? This part of 2nd is very depressing at the moment, so I hope the city pushes them to incorporate more greenery.

There is a crane set up in Eastview (?) Just south of Taylor and backing circle Dr. I think Eastview bowl is around there. No idea what is getting built but I'd bet a retirement condo of some kind.

Yup, it's a senior's apartment building called Columbian Village. It's for Knights of Columbus Charities and will be linked to the existing Columbian Manor senior's home. The new building is 6 storey wood framed structure on top of a single level underground parkade.

Yep, that's all correct, I knew there were plans for it, didn't know it was moving ahead ahead right now, not surprised though

No arena rumours from anyone hey? Announcement of a location is now a year late.
I have a crazy conspiracy that Murray Edwards (Flames owner, Edwards School of Business namesake) who’s now living in Switzerland for probably tax purposes is going to move the flames to saskatoon over his hatred of the new Calgary mayor claiming a climate emergency, when his wealth is built on oilsands.

Trust me, I want Saskatoon to get an NHL team as much as anyone. Unironically, I would move back much faster... That being said, it will never happen within our lifetimes. While Saskatoon could (possibly) fill out an area 41x a year for $150/ticket, it's the lack of overall market for TV purposes that will prevent it from ever happening. This is where teams get most of their revenue from.

That aside, it would be great if someone with some information could shed light on when we can expect to hear from the city. I'm assuming the delay is as much to do with COVID than anything.

Announcing a multi-million dollar project, with plenty likely coming from public funds, during an air-borne pandemic that prohibits the venue itself from filling up, is likely political nightmare.

"there are major investments we're seeing, for example, with the Jansen potash mine just outside of the city. Those bring engineering, finance and office jobs. And our goal is to direct as much of that activity into the downtown."

Can’t wait for the office tower announcement! Maybe they’d renovate Nutrien’s old tower - deem it more sustainable than a brand new build.

Announcing a new arena project and announcing where the city intends to build an arena in the future are two completely different things. I don't think the latter would attract nearly the same level of public scrutiny. I wonder if there's another reason why it hasn't been released yet?

100% I agree with this. Would be great to find out why it has been so delayed.

Moving the Flames to Saskatoon wouldn't make a dent in the NHL's overall tv deal, and revenue sharing is where the big bucks come from. It would be easy play hard ball with SN or TSN in Canada; if you want the Leafs, Habs, or Oilers, you gotta also buy the Saskatoon Snow Storms' local broadcast rights.

The biggest thing Saskatoon lacks is not rich individuals, but large corporate sponsors. Forget about a single mine bringing in those dollars. Calgary, where many of Canada's largest companies have their headquarters, will always have a much better business case for a professional franchise even if the fan base potential was similar (it isn't).

keep in mind the owner of the Flames is from Saskatchewan, not Alberta. Could happen!

BHP will be a massive new entrant to Saskatoon’s corporate sponsorship mix. They’re 4 times the market value of Nutrien and when they originally entered Sask Potashcorp doubled their community support. We’ve also got a tear on nuclear companies like Nexgen, Orano, and Cameca now that Europe is declaring nuclear power as green this week. Competitive sponsorship showdown here we come!

Tower crane at Columbian Village on Taylor Street. Not much of a picture of the crane. Really just an excuse to post a photo of sundogs on a -34 morning.

I have to be honest: I was back in Saskatoon over Christmas visiting family and the weather did not encourage me to move back.

When I lived in Saskatoon I was used to it, but two weeks ago I took a 90-second walk around the River Landing Village plaza and then ran back to the car because I was so cold

laugh at the dome all you want but the future of saskatoon in 100-200 years definitely includes something of sorts downtown. we probably won’t be the first city to enact it, but something that blocks the elements has to be invented by then lol. for now, we should have skywalks.

typing this from Calgary where temps are 20 degrees higher and the snow is all going to melt next week

Does Baydo have you scoping out land there for its next build?
