^ My hope is that bit by bit the North/Clybourn area will get built up like this, and slowly some of the suburban "scars" of the past will get redeveloped into a higher use

Just wondering if anyone knows what's going on at this site. Are the Scientologists still involved?

There have been people working on the facade for months, and they're there everyday but things are moving at a snails pace. I honestly can't see any real progress over the last weeks.

It is... but keep in mind that this is affordable housing on a shoestring budget, in one of the city's poorer Latino neighborhoods (West Humboldt). It was a vacant lot for years after a catastrophic fire burned down a Woolworth's in 1975.

My only gripe is that on such a major corner as North/Pulaski, it should really have retail space on the ground floor rather than vaguely-defined community space. Unfortunately the various funding sources for low-income housing don't really support mixed-use.

In the late '70s it was an open pedestrian mall with a dozen or so small shops. A good source of fake ID's.

^ Auspicious timing this Sept 7th. Maybe the crane boasts wide and zoom webcams as well as an A10 processor.

I look forward to the day where something... anything... is done to the hulking, rusting, horrendous civic disgrace that is the Wacker Drive Extension.

Does it really bother you? It's so out of the way.

of all of the things that can be described as "horrendous civic disgraces" in chicago, i believe the wacker drive extension comes in at # 587.

You guys are right, its a beautiful piece of infrastructure. No problem here. Who am I to complain of the aesthetics of a triple decker behemoth built to highway visual standards in the postcard view of the river mouth. Those guys back in the twenties really overthought the original beaux-arts Wacker Drive design, they could have saved alot of money and built it to 1970's standards - no one would know the better.

I mentioned in a recent post, they demolished a nice limestone wall that screened Wacker. I'm assuming because it would cost money to maintain it.
