My name is Tony, had a friend named Arvid who was from Poland and big into skyscrapers as well.

Anyways, now live in burbs, have wife and kids, getting more caught up on projects.

But in the city, particularly the central area in a condo? No way.
Well, of course.

And if you buy in Manhattan the prices will be even different. Comparing different housing between different locations is nonsensical. I mean, you can get a 2,000 square foot single family home in Gary, Indiana at the end of the airport's runway for about $13,000, so obviously that's the best deal, right? Why isn't everyone and their brother clamoring for that? Exactly because location matters to everyone, even if some people are less sensitive to differences between, say, Naperville and Lakeview than others.

A sign just went up in a window of the vacant Artcraft building on S Clark, which has been owned by Scientology for years now without being touched. The sign is for NW Construction. Maybe they're about to actually do something with that place.

There is also a big populace that do not care for big square footage houses in a cul de sac, myself included. I was raised in a 4 person family home of 1,500 square feet. I rather sacrifice square footage to live in a bustling city with culture and amenities than own a massive home in the suburbs that requires yard work, maintenance and upkeep. I work enough hours. I rather maximize my time for family, relaxation, and entertainment. There is so much to do around Chicago at any given time. Each to their own. People gravitate towards what best suits them and make financial sacrifices (cars, size of home) accordingly. If you really want to talk about "bang for your buck", I do not think anything tops owning a unit in a four story flat. You can own 1,600+ square feet in a 4 story flat located in good school district neighborhoods for the mid 300-500s and pay small monthly assessments. But then you have to join a gym, take kids to the lake or a Chicago Park District pool for swimming, etc.

Thank you for all the welcomes. Congrats Steely on the family and wow, this site is just amazing, all the updates, pics, info. Unreal.

As for as father in law company, I have no idea. Again this was back in the early to mid 2000's He has been retired for a while.

I graduated from Loyola University, my old street on rosemont/kenmore is now part of Loyola!!!! I am shocked at how both the Lakeshore and Downtown has changed!!!

Keep up the great works guys, will chime in from now and then. But from a lover of buildings, this site is simply amazing!

It looks like Jefferson Park will get its 12 story TOD near the blue line CTA stop.

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20151001/...ht-balance-revitalize-jeff-park-ald-says

The project is expected to generate $2.4 million in tax revenue for the city.

^ Wouldn't this post fit the highrise thread? Anyhow, I was excited and shocked to read that only half the people there complained while the other half supported the project. A 4 story proposal excites the entire neighborhood in fear but a 12 story building gets applauses? If the NIMBYs complain less the more stories there are to a building, then maybe the next supertall should be in Jefferson Park. I also loved seeing this quote in the article.
Quote:
Several supporters of the project told Arena the 265-space parking garage was too big, and would encourage people to drive to Jefferson Park and then hop on the CTA Blue Line or Metra to get downtown.

Arena said he agreed, and would be happy to trade one floor of 53 parking spaces for 16 more apartments, and promised to ask the developer to consider the change.

I really like John Arena, he is a breath of fresh air for the area. I think demographics in that area are definitely going to change things there, and the old farts who hate pedestrians and love parking will eventually be diluted out, especially as gentrification keeps working its way up the blue line.

I'm so glad that fat fuck Levar is gone.

St. Edmunds Village Apartments in Washington Park in the last few days has received 5 new construction building permits totaling 58 new units. This is around 61st and Indiana/Prairie. All but one building is on vacant land

Worth mentioning that the Richard Driehaus auto collection (Chicago Vintage Motor Carriage), currently at 700 S. Desplaines, will be renovating and moving to the Marmon and Hudson buildings at 2222 2230 S. Michigan, on Motor Row. Ald. Dowell says she's working to convince them to have public displays during the annual McCormick Place Auto Show.

Gotta wonder what kind of multimillionaire Driehaus is, that he's actually spending his own money to indulge his hobby, when clearly the mayor would have signed over a chunk of lakefront parkland to him.

If you really think this then you are not very bright. Comparing George Lucas and a large collection of fine art, special effects stuff, etc that will draw in billions of dollars to a pretty small car collection that would only generate in the low millions is so idiotic it's not even funny.

It's hard to say exactly what his personal net worth is, but even if he technically isn't a billionaire (he may or may not be, it's just not much reported either way) it's fair to say he controls billions of dollars. He also has a museum dedicated to old mansions in River North. And he's a leading philanthropist, giving away tens of millions of dollars annually both directly as an individual and indirectly through his foundation. As far as reputation among investors and traders go, locally he's probably second only to Ken Griffin who has a personal net worth widely reported to be in the billions.

^ George Lucas will be spending his own money for his museum as well. A lot of it. Far more than Driehaus is spending.

He'll probably be spending more than Driehaus is even worth total and if not, then it's probably a large percentage of what Driehaus is worth.

Gotta love this DNAinfo headline:

"JEFFERSON PARK — The Jefferson Park Neighborhood Association Wednesday elected a new president who opposes efforts to revitalize the neighborhood's business district by allowing dense residential developments near the transit center."
