Renters feeling squeeze
Declining vacancy rates blamed on economic cycles

Justin Ouimet has spent the past five months looking for a new home in west Edmonton. "It's been a long time trying to find a place I can afford," Ouimet said Tuesday.

"I've been trying to move to the west side so badly because my fiancée and daughter live out there right now. They are living with her parents right now because my fiancée needs extra support from her mom because she had a very tough pregnancy."

Ouimet says its been a struggle finding a place that fits within his price range, is in good condition and in a safe neighbourhood.

Making matters worse, Edmonton's rental market is significantly tightening up, statistics from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. revealed Tuesday...

Apparently these are the old version, although overall it will be similar in layout. Massing is a bit heavier.

ummm.....that tower has the scale of some rental appartment built in the 70's, or Stationlands. no thanks.

There's a Today in History column in the Journal that refers to a 1915 population census showing 45,343 people living on the north side of the river and 13,996 living on the south side. Which side of the river has the most people now?

Spending a lot of green to get builders to think green

EDMONTON - The city is looking at spending $720,000 a year to encourage homebuilders and renovators to think green.

The money is now used by the Carbon Dioxide Reduction Edmonton program, covering such items as rebates for energy-efficient furnaces and clothes washers.

But officials want to direct some of that cash toward other schemes under the new green building plan, such as energy-efficiency labels for buildings and education programs.

“What we think we’re going to do in the future is channel that (spending) to the green building program to focus on new and older houses and industrial buildings,” Peter Ohm, manager of the urban planning and environment branch, said Wednesday.

The tower hasn't been submitted yet for DP. The only piece that has is the west half of this development, primarily the bank site. The east half and tower are future projects, but the future could be right away, or it could be a while down the road.

I think Shofear has a love/hate relationship with Stationlands. Pretty sure he meant exactly what he wrote.

June 20th, 6-9pm, Christ Church Anglican at 12116-102 Avenue. A notice was sent out recently to adjacent property owners. Going for rezoning to CB2 and DC2.

"The rezoning will allow for the comprehensive redevelopment of this site to accommodate a mixed use development with approximately 42,000ft of commercial space and 500 residential units, ranging in height from 4-6 storeys and a single tower of 22 storeys."

'ParioPlan is handling the planning and community consultation, apparently. Integra is listed as the architect, along with Group2.'
