Avenir Centre just announced on Twitter that they're now the home of a new basketball team, the Moncton Motion.

Have to admit I got excited for a second thinking this would be a CEBL team. But alas, it's the ECBL, home of the Truro Tide, Valley Vipers and Bathurst Bears.

It's something, I guess.

With the folding of the Newfoundland Growlers in the CEBL, maybe they didnt want to rush right away into the East Coast again.

Also the fees are probably as high in the ECBL.

The year they won the championship, the average attendance was 1,444 (or 1,152 depending on where you look), which would place them 8th (out of 10 team) in the CEBL.

So maybe a year or two to set the ground and build a following, and who knows, maybe a few teams could upgrade to the CEBL and make a third division with Montreal.

Its an interesting model. The league owns all the teams, so no shady ownership skipping town when the books aren't looking so hot. I suppose it puts everyone on a level playing field, but may also limit what teams can do to improve their product if they are restricted to certain budgets. I can understand how this would be more sustainable as there would be no need to flights like we saw with the NBL. Ultimately it will come down to the product on the court along with pricing.

I'm not sure I really like how the championship "tournament" is moved around each year. You cheer on your team all year only to not see them play at home in the playoffs? I suppose the idea is all the die hards would be willing to travel to whatever city is hosting. But will wait and see how it plays out.

Single game tickets are on sale for the WJHC. There's a good selection of seats still available for every game including the Team Canada ones

Wonder if they'll lower prices on the tickets closer too in order to fill the arena a bit more.

No way the ticketmaster overlords will allow that

The tickets aren't going to get cheaper than what a package would cost per game, and the only difference in price between the two is the $21 in service fees you pay.

Ticketmaster wont do it, but the "verified" reseller selling on Ticketmaster (or stubhub) will definitely lower the price come closer to the less popular games.

its a business for them, for some they'll win big (canada games or Shania Twain), so they can accept selling lesser popular games in order to get rid of them.

During the Montreal juniors, I bought tickets for Finland vs Lativia for 5 bucks (5 rows from the ice).

And more recently, I bought ticket for a Porcupine Tree concert for 40$, while the original ticket was close to 100$.

Same thing for Shania Twain, tickets might go that low, but they will definatly not let them at that high prices if no one is buying them.

Something has been added to the rafters of the main lobby at the Avenir Centre:

Team Canada roster will be announced tomorrow afternoon on the plaza in front of the Avenir Centre. Team Canada will play an all-star AUS hockey team on Sunday and Monday at the Avenir Centre, followed by a couple of pre tournament games at the Avenir Centre next weekend.

And so it begins..........

Sorry. I believe it was for the tryout squad. Final selection will be after the two games against the university all stars.

I went to both of the Team Canada vs. AUS AllStars games at the Avenir Centre yesterday and today.

Attendance was very impressive. I would say there were about 7500 fans at both games, with the cheap seats essentially full. It was only the premium seating along both sides of the arena that were partially empty. I presume these were Wildcats season ticket holders who bought tournament passes (such as myself). Allowing for this, I would say both of these scrimmages were technical sellouts.

Pretty impressive for a couple of games played to set the final team roster in which the best players were not on the ice.

Team Canada has two more pre tournament games in Moncton next week, playing Switzerland and Slovakia, before decamping for Halifax.

I sincerely hope that in the future that Hockey Canada & the IIHF consider some of these smaller and true junior hockey markets for this event. Looks like both Team Canada pre tournament games in Moncton will be sellouts and this is at prices which I would personally consider inflated given the nature of pre-tournament games. Finland / USA on NYE looks like it will be 7000+. A matchup like this in a major city would likely have looked embarrassing on TV.

Its just great to see Avenir Centre be used to its full potential again, what a run its having between Imagine Dragons, World Juniors, 2 Shania Twain sellouts, successful comedy shows including an anticipated Kevin Hart show etc. Not to mention some of the added features of Wildcat Games like a live DJ & Organ player working harmonious.

In addition it can handle the additional media that flood into the city with so much press space and I even saw that Team Canada scratches like Bedard were sitting in the Luxury Suites.

And I'm not hearing too many complaints about the parking

It was slow going initially with shows and using the building to its full potential but its starting to come together. I still think there is improvements that could be made.

My personal wish list of additions

-Zios Pizza (to resurrect it) in one of the unused spaces or another local pizza chain
-Halo Donuts
-Better Flexibility from the Venue for Promotions on Food & Drink
-The bottom 4 rows should not be club seats, these are not premium views and are essentially empty almost every wildcats game.
-A few more tables / social areas to fill in empty space around the concourse, they added abit of this this year.
-Add some more colour to the walls by showcasing former Wildcats who made it to the NHL, oddly the coliseum did this better than Avenir has.
-Digital signage outside showcasing upcoming shows - I understand this marketing occurs mostly online now, but it adds a layer of excitement around the building and to visitors who might be in town for a few days.

Due to "incredible demand", Kevin Hart has added a second show in Moncton on April 18th.

The Avenir Centre is on quite a roll right now!

Not sure what the hell happened since the Sting concert, 9th row on the floor facing the stage I paid $175, Twain tickets at the same location is $650, Kevin Hart tickets at the same seating location for show #1 is $480 and the show #2 is $260.

My annual income is above the national average, however there's no way in hell I'm paying these prices. Are people around here really paying these extravagant prices or are we going to see scalpers (3rd Party Trusted Resellers & TicketMaster, yup, might as well add TM as a scalper b/c that's pretty much what they've turned into) selling off their price gouging tickets as it gets closer to show time?
