Old loft building elevates Quincy St tower. 565 west Quincy st.

Condo towers in the city do seem to be rising taller, but at 565 West Quincy Street, a high-rise is getting a boost by standing atop an older loft building. At 565 Quincy, the developer Belgravia Group is adding 11 stories of steel and glass to a seven-story brick building put up in two phases in the 1920s and 1950s.

“The original building was built like a tank, to handle manufacturing,” says Jacob Kaufman, Belgravia’s executive vice president. This means that adding some residential floors above the original building presents no structural problem—and besides, says Kaufman, “we love being able to save it.”

ummmmm . . . how is it that the sun is shining from the north so that there is a shadow of the Peshtigo on the building to the south?? wtf . . . you know that the podium is going to be super hideous when the hide it in one of the images with trees. ick.

Except, they are ripping off the corner tower, which is the signature element of the building.

I appreciate the effort to save the building, but this poor design and insensitive execution makes it look like a cheap answer rather than something respectful of the architecture. A modern addition is great, but not this.

I think that's afternoon sun coming from the west, not that it really matters.

^ that parking lot is already long gone, transformed into the currently under construction parkview project, which includes two residential towers (the 1st one is u/c) and a park built on top of its underground parking garage.

^^^ yeah if 560 fairbanks, peshtigo, and that carley proposal get built there will be almost no signifigant surface lots left in Streeterville!

^ yup very true...they will have to start tearing things down to replace them with highrises. By the way any new on 150 east ontario? I like that building for so long but havent heard anything about it for awhile...this developer really is screwing himself the longer he waits since this was a fairly old proposal.

565 W. Quincy would look a lot better with recessed balconies. It doesn't look modern, it looks clunky and cheap, at least to me.

And I'm not getting excited about Peshtigo until I see a street level view from the west.

Another mini-update: A crew was assembling the tower crane at the Wit Hotel site this afternoon when I walked by.

I'm guessing that the city seeks to avoid two major construction sites on the same block. Since rentals are hot right now, and they don't need pre-sales, this tower would likely go up fast after approval.

^^^ That's not necessarily true, for example, the Elysian and Ten East Delaware are on the same block, plus right across the street from them to the west Walton on the Park is going up, and then the whole block to the north is also under construction with the Gino's north Rennovations/rehab and the 7 story Barney's of New York. So basically there are three blocks all adjacent to each other that are all under construction at once...

I don't know why the city would care in this case, I mean there are 5 or 6 spots in the city right now where multiple buildings are going up on the same block or across the street from one another...
