Yes, there seems to be a new forumer a day for some reason, the more the merrier! It keeps the forum from getting stale or boring.

The name of the stillborn Halifax CFL franchise was the Atlantic Schooners I believe.

There are days I wish that not everything that comes out of Atlantic Canada have a nautical theme... I know, I know. Heritage is important, but as my signature says, the past is good, but the future is where our destiny lies.

I actually really like GBS. What I had in mind was the new Casino. We're twenty miles from the ocean, and I honestly have no idea where the nearest lighthouse is, but the casino is being built with a nautical/lighthouse theme.

Yeah that was a stupid idea...maybe if they had built it downtown, near the riverfront, like they should have it might have made more sense...but still.

Well, Bernard Cyr always threatened to revive Cy's when he tore it down to build the Chateau Moncton. You never know......that tail may come out of storage sometime. Maybe we'll even see that "trap" again, proudly ornamenting the roof of a brand new downtown restaurant!

I always wondered why they just didn't incorporate Cy's into the Chateau Moncton....even if there was no lobster trap.

I don't think mr.cyr ever wanted the restaruant.He wanted the land it was sitting on to build his hotel,or he would have included it.

Statscan reports that Moncton CMA has had over 222 M in building permits between Jan and Sept this year

I think next year will be even bigger with the casino starting, more work on Mapleton Power Center, Justice Center, Ashford Office etc etc coming into the limelight.

For comparison SJ is nipping at our heels wit over 213 M in the same period

They have much more industrial construction going on (69M there, 12M here)

But we have more residential and commercial.

Moncton is doing well in residential despite the "housing slump" going on recently

on a per capita basis it becomes obvious we are doing alright

For the table I used all Atlantic CMAs and Canada's 5 largest CMAs for reference.

Moncton - 1,109 - 126,424 - 877
St. John's - 1,498 - 181,113 - 827

That's promising news, but I think we need to take it with a grain of salt. Here in the Maritimes, the ratio of home owners to renters is much higher than in the large cities. That may skew the numbers a bit. This is assuming new rentals aren't included in the numbers above.

It's still a good sign, though.

^ yes they are. Those numbers include new apartments, single houses (inc. mobile homes), row houses, doubles, cottages and conversions.

In fact in Moncton we have had slightly more apartments built than homes this year so far.

In general, an apartment is considered a housing unit. In other words, Moncton had over 1100 houses, apartments, condos, trailers etc.

If anything, a higher ratio of houses to apartment buildings would be a good sign that there is a lot of money floating around in the economy and that people can afford to buy houses.

Of course, that's bad for density, so you have to take the good with the bad.

So, just to clarify, last year in the Moncton CMA, the rate of new housing unit construction was 877 units per 100,000 population?

Relatively speaking, we therefore have the highest rate of new housing construction in Atlantic Canada.

In absolute terms, we had 1,109 new units constructed last year while in Halifax, they had 1,626 units built.

Given the size differential between the two communities, this difference in new housing unit construction is really not that much! They are three times our size but only outstrip us in new housing unit construction by about 45%.

We are doing pretty well!
