Sure, the profits may or may not remain in the local community depending on who owns the business and the franchise agreement. But all of these foreign chains employ local people, pay sales and income taxes, rent local property, etc.

Maybe you disagree, but many people would consider Krispy Kreme remarkably different from Tim Hortons or Robin's even though they sell the same-ish product - last week my mother, who was visiting us from out of town, insisted on driving one hour each way to Surrey to get Krispy Kreme even though Duffin's, Lucky's, and Cartems are all closer and better. Saying Juke is the same as Jollibee because they both sell fried chicken and Beaucoup is the same as Hazukidu because they are both bakeries is a little reductive, and tells me you don't pay attention to details and/or haven't tried these places.

But the problem is that you want to pretend that everything local is great but they have owners who are as much of a douchebag than any multinational conglomerate or they go to Costco or Sysco for their ingredients.

I do love me some Downlow and Juke though.

Juke for when I have my dignity. Downlow for when I'm like 'F it', and just want to consume the world.

talking to a manager at the North Richmond store they tell me

1) Park Royal and then Metrotown will open in mid/late December 2022
2) Both the Vancouver locations are set for February 2023
3) a new Scott Road location is set for Summer 2023.

I've long been a proponent of Automats and hot food vending because it has a really small footprint if you exclude the dining hall but I'm curious how they are breaking a profit since the traditional Automat model has been unprofitable for 50 years and there's been a few failed attempts, notably Bamn!.

Only problem with your dream about automat is that the food will probably suck. This screams failure.

Yeah, that's the problem with the Automat model. It worked fine for soups, salads, baked and oven cooked goods.....in the 40's when 15 cents for a slice of pie was still profitable. Today your options are expensive offerings or very, very processed foods that might sit in the compartment for 2-4 hours. Note how the other BDS outlets are using large compartments. You still get a full wall of product but you have less waste because you don't have as much fresh product put out. Not really a great use of space.

BDS gives off a vibe of small portions and high prices.

These are popular and successful in the Netherlands.. and have been there since the 40s I think.

Bamn! tried replicating FEBO's business and even imported the same serving units for their location but there was too many complaints about having to feed in mountains of quarters for mediocre food.

Keep in mind that credit/debit tap is only a new thing to Americans now and they don't have loonies/toonies. The other was a poor location and high rent. It was never going to work.

You are being a little sensationalist but that's the other problem. Taking a successful european thing and making it work somewhere else in the world is hard. You are up against different lifestyles, diets and yes, how the late night crowds act.

Sad to hear but it was not as good as it used to be, that location anyway.
The Langley one is closing but will open a new one in Willowbrook's Courtyard expansion. The old location in Langley will become a Kings Taps.

Martinis on West Broadway is closing. Shame it was always a solid choice for non-chain, reasonably-priced meals. Owner is retiring.
