I know the tool doesn't take trees, buildings, or atmospheric effects into account to calculate these views, but on a clear day this summer maybe someone with a drone (hint hint) could go out to some of these places and try to get a record for the farthest Austin skyline pic on the forum.

At this time my views of downtown/6xG have topped out in the 21-23 mile range.

That includes this shot from the ridges north of Lago Vista/Balcones Canyonlands NWR:



They also pop up in the southern area of Georgetown along and near I-35. (behind the Domain highrises).

Those shots are so awesome. I love that someone actually has a camera good enough to capture it (instead of a crummy phone camera that can't zoom for sht).

I kinda went crazy with the tool yesterday after making the Austin map and made some similar maps for other cities in Texas and the US. Not sure where to post them though . It creates some interesting horizon profiles for cities near coasts or mountain ranges. The furthest viewing of a skyline I've found so far is for San Francisco at almost 120mi (holy hell!)

The average elevation of this tower's southern façade is 485'. Thus, giving the tower an approximate height of 1,359' AMSL. The grade elevation of 6th and Congress is actually closer to 490'.

I realize downtown has quite the elevation variation, but I didn't want to be too exact with it since putting it at the exact heigh would mean you only get a sliver of a view of the towers lol. The calculation I used should give you a bit less than 100' of the Independent and Austonian and approximately 200'+ of the 6X. It's probably already a PitA to find them at these vistas as is, so I wouldn't wanna make it any more difficult Let's just hope the Waterline will push that ceiling up soon so that way we can someday be seen from San Antonio.

With those shadowy balconies on the north side hiding the windows, and the exposed concrete columns, and the way the curtainwall turns the NW corner before abruptly stopping, and the notch at the top of the NW curtainwall, and the weird transition from balconies to crown, this thing is going to look unfinished even after it's occupied. Some weird design choices.

I agree. It will definitely look unfinished the first time you see it. The same goes for the independent. Even when they finish it will take the general public some time to realize they're looking at the final product.

Are the balconies complete yet? I keep assuming the glass railings are not installed yet. They look unfinished to me. I have already expressed my dislike for the exposed raw concrete. We will see what the finished product looks like.

I'm pretty sure they are, at least on the middle floors, because its looking like the renders. The top 5 floors or so are missing railings. I hate that north balconies wall way more than the exposed concrete slab on the south side. Its giving massive parking garage vibes.

I hate those top 5 floors NW corner even more than the north wall and the exposed concrete. Basically this will only look “finished” from the east.

The 8th balcony from the bottom, on the right, appears to be missing some horizontal type bracing. That particular balcony looks much better than the others. I'd bet the others will loose that ugly horizontal midline. At least I sure hope so. The north side looks like Soviet Industrial Housing sided with glass.

There are certain angles I like....specifically, west facing and some north facing views. The south face view just hurts my eyes. What do we call this trend where projects completely lack any character or curiosity? It's unintentional minimalism that just feels chaotic and stark.

Can't wait for Waterline to take the focus awayyyyy and for ATX & Republic to cozy up some. 6X has always seemed to be the Aon Center (LA) of Austin--one of the tallest, but big filler.

Maybe post office block will give us the prized center grand super-talll

I was in Austin last weekend and was able to drive by this tower. Since I was driving, I couldn't take a picture - but, it seems that the exposed concrete on the lower-level balconies (on the north façade) had either a slate paint or some sort of paneling on them.

With regard to the exposed concrete on the upper levels (south façade) - maybe that area will be panted or panels added when the window washing crane and baskets become operational. It does not look like that would be possible with just the tower crane and/or a worker leaning out from a balcony.

I hope so, but the east side of the core was able to have the curtain wall installed over it with just a swing stage.
