Naive? Okay. Just be aware, I will be bringing this comment up the second the proposal gets approved.

You also thought the big announcement would happen two years ago instead of this year and that the new arena in Calgary would blow away Edmonton's.

Looking forward to it (honestly I hope it gets done) I just think you have way to much confidence in 3 levels of government that want nothing to do with financing privatized sports.

I remember about a year ish ago, This thread was absolutely ripping me apart because I said the concepts of Stadiums are always dressed up prettier than the finished product and I referenced IGF. Every one lost it on me

And here we are a year later. although it looks beautiful....The quality just isn't what the concept was showing

Yup, the Flames are definitely going to hold onto that card too, just when it looks like the decision may not go their way they will play it. I think it's pretty obvious that the Flames have been taking all this time to come up with a strategy as opposed to a concrete plan for the arena (as is very evident by the poor design and lack of details). This will get built, I guarantee it, it's just what form the end result takes that is the biggest unknown to me.

I try and problem solve. Not that that doesn't create a whole slew of other problems.

Calgary could steal the summer Olympics and become, I believe, the first city to host both a summer and a winter Olympics. The only question becomes the sailing events.

The concepts of new Mosaic show the siding to have a translucent quality while in reality it looks to be industrial siding. You are definitely right about that aspect of it being less pretty than the renders.

I always wondered what that translucent material was supposed to composed off? Who knows? Maybe the industrial siding is the first compromise on materials that had to be made with the $285 million budget.

^ Who says it was necessarily a compromise? Maybe that was the intended material all along... it could just have been an artistic embellishment by whoever created the rendering. Not exactly a shocker when someone trying to sell something dresses it up to look nicer in the marketing materials.

This is why ppl were so shocked with the calgary proposal. Normally renders are all dazzled up and the finished product is less stellar because of cost savings.

But the calgary proposal looked like a highschool computer design project.

That's going to be Beijing in 2022.

I was thinking 2026 just to annoy Toronto.

I have no idea why I am in such a jerk mood, but I am.

I'm not sure the exterior is done as the rendering certainly has another lattice layer overtop of the whole thing. It looks community fieldhouse as it stands right now. Not bad, but certainly not like the rendering yet.

Winter Olympics will be an expensive proposition. $10 billion minimum would be my guess. Security alone is $1 - 1.5 billion alone I think.

Games have doubled in size since Calgary last hosted so more facilities are needed.

- new ski towers as old ones are obsolete
- new bobsleigh and luge as old ones are obsolete.
- indoor long track speed-skating could still be used but would need significant upgrades for Olympics
- new stadium
- need 3 arenas - 2 arenas for men's and women's hockey and another for figure skating and short-track
- need a large curling centre
- new Olympic Park for all the various skiing events
- media centre
- one or two Olympic Villages

Yeah, this would easily be $10 billion. If the deadline for bidding for the 2026 Olympics is 2017, that only gives Calgary 2 years to get their act together. Will the oil and the economy have bounced back by then? If not, then I wouldn't expect there to be any significant drive within Alberta to host the games. Remember, two-thirds of the cost will be paid by Calgary and Alberta. Most likely, Quebec City will be representing Canada in the bid process anyways, as long as the OC relaxes their height requirements for the downhill skiing.

Beijing hosted summer in 2008, and were selected to host winter in 2022. They could become the second though I guess.

I'm interested to see what the exterior of Mosaic will look like when lighting is installed as well. I think it looks quite good though. Feels like something that isn't going to look "old" in a couple years.

You could be right but It looks like the exterior of the rendering is open to the building the same way the wood is on TD place I think this is the final exterior which makes me question if the roof itself will be partially translucent itself. And just to clarify I'm not trashing the facade of Mosiac. Just stating if this is indeed the finish then the people of regina might be let down a bit the same way Winnipeg was. And i warned of this a year ago and got trampled on for even implying the finish on this Stadium may not be that much better than IGF

Lets take a moment to look back at where these projects started and evolved from

If you're going to compare the render to the actual product, compare the right areas. The area nearly completed is on the South-East side of the stadium, the render is the North-West portion.

While there are no pictures of the South-East side, this render shows both a translucent and fully opaque part of the siding, depending on where you look. This is because where the translucent parts are is the ramps to go up and down.

AHH fair enough I didn't even notice that. Still it's a bit drab compared to the renderings yeah?

Calgary can take a number, Toronto and Quebec City are next in line. And with Canada having just hosted the Pan Ams, the Commonwealth games might be Calgary's best bet. Next available spot is 2026 though...

What theyre putting up right now looks pretty similar to that siding in the rendering under the mosaic signage.
