I am an American from San Diego who got on this forum to read about future renovations of the Rogers Center. I remember watching the 1990 world Series as a kid and being awed how modern that stadium was, but 25 years later it looks like a concrete leviathan in comparison to just about all the other ballparks and stadiums in MLB. I heard that its owners want to put in around 400 million in to it. With a hotel in one end and concrete walls for the roof tracks on the sides, it looks like the original architects boxed that stadium in to prevent any significant remodel that wont end up costing a lot more than that. Hopefully they will have renderings soon of what they have in mind. It will probably be something like, putting patio deck areas (like at Coors field and Progressive field) behind the outfield and maybe an outfield display like at Marlins park, but hopefully not as gaudy. But nothing that will open up the outfield to city views, unless they will end up spending more than that.
I saw those initial renderings for the proposed sports complex in Calgary. It looks like a terrible idea to have the arena and "fieldhouse"right next to each other like conjoined twins. If it gets built, in 15-20 years when they want to upgrade it they will regret having boxed themselves in like that a la Rogers Center.

-Translucent roof panels
-Black Seats with Bluejay logo's or Maple leafs embroidered into them (the Blue everything washes the place out)
-Seamless glass on The hotel Windows
-New 3 sided jumbotron that either hangs from the stationary Roof trusses or protrudes out from the wall it currently is secured to with 2 smaller screens and one main one equal to the size they have now.
-I agree the out field needs some kind of make over Balconies aren't a bad idea. (please no marlins tacky sideshows)
-Natural grass
-The bottom level seating arrangement needs to be made more suited to baseball after the Argos move out.
-Glass on the exterior

What RC needs most is natural lighting That is the #1 change that will transform the fan experience at the dome. Even when the roof is open it would enhance this view with clear roof panels

The insecurity of MLS fans is coming in loud and clear. I thought it was possibly just a TFC thing but It seems to be league wide phenomenon.

Why do people think that Vancouver cannot support both. I am a Lions season ticket holder and I go to a few Whitecaps games too. I can support both and others can too
I think the Lions have got the message loud and clear and will be making changes. I have heard they will be introducing cheaper ticket packages in the fall, bringing back half time shows and will be promoting themselves more. Dennis Skulsky was on the radio a few weeks ago taking calls and left with about 4 pages of notes. I think the Lions will adapt and survive, they just need to play more entertaining football, first and foremost!!

Last 2 points I will make as we seem to get off "stadiums" and more into "culture" in this thread

Whitecaps games are 2 hours, well promoted and are good for families (kids with shorter attention spans, etc.) Lions need to work a bit on the in game experience and the CFL to getting games back to under 3 hours

MLS does a good job with social media and their web site and the CFL is there and I think with the new commish's experience, he will take the CFL to the next level to help with the younger fans. If anyone follows any of the CFL the teams on twitter, they do a great job!

I get the impression that CFL teams had a bit of NHL-envy when they saw how much hockey tickets were relative to their own. CFL ticket prices have risen sharply over the last 5-10 years and I think a lot of fans are making the economically rational decision to stay at home and watch on TV instead - particularly since the league has become so TV friendly with no more blackouts and hardly any overlapping games anymore.

It's a different world than the Canadian NHL clubs where demand generally exceeds supply and the games tend to draw expense account crowds who don't care if they have to pay $150 for a ticket. Maybe if CFL stadiums were capped at 15,000 seats they could get away with those sorts of tactics, but it strikes me as really optimistic for teams that have always played in half full venues to start charging as though they have the hottest ticket in town... the Lions are bad for this.

Agreed, if you also look at Lions games, the sidelines for the most part are full(ish) its the endzones that are empty. I sit on the sidelines and if they are offering the endzone seats for $20, I am not going to be upset or change seats for that matter

^ Yeah... why not try to fill the seats that are going unused? In the early 90s the Bombers didn't draw that well, usually around the low 20 thousands. That meant there were over 10,000 empty seats for most games. So they gave away plenty of tickets to schoolkids. That's how I went to my first few games and I got hooked. I've been to probably close to 200 various CFL games since.

The teams don't necessarily have to give tickets away, but why not make them accessible?

It's not domestic but Arsenal have a Young Guns Enclosure that is exclusively for 1,000 Junior Gunner Members aged 12-16 who get discounted tickets. It hasn't been overly successful but it shows just one possibility.

This Lions did have a promo that was for School Kids that was 4 tickets (as long as at least 2 were kids) for $60. Great Deal, problem was no one knew about it. It was introduced to schools in June for August games but the timing was off and it was not promoted more than that. Complete miss but I have heard they are coming up with another promo in September

Sell cheap student tickets at 7/11. Theres always scads of kids in there. Great place to get noticed by students.

There's more that can be done with community & high school football. It's your built-in fan base! Every community team in the Lower Mainland should have access to a discount ticket program -- free ticket for the kid, assuming an adult ticket is also purchased, regardless of the section/price level.
