Yea actually screw Ingles, that design was perfect.

They could have at least got like Pelli or someone who doesn't design out-there weird stuff. I mean, there's nothing wrong with out-there weird stuff but that's absolutely not what the WTC needs.

Agreed. Maybe we could end up getting just an interior redesign? Why waste the time/money to do a major exterior redesign? Fingers crossed...

For all we know maybe Ingels can actually improve the diamonds. Sharp edges seem to be his thing, so I'd be nice to see a Norman Foster Remix Featuring Ingel. A tower combining Normans genius with Ingels psilocybin like mindset, and we might have an even finer gem in the works.

They make it sound like it will be the whole building. And I don't know, I think they're just stupid. I understand Fox news needs space different than that of an office layout but surely that could all be done without changing the outside majorly.

When I said I'm cautiously optimistic I meant like really, really cautiously. As in he'll probably bomb it but I'm just happy something is getting built and want to tell myself it won't suck. I would actually wait another five or ten years for Foster's design but of course Silverstien won't.

This is why I always hated the idea of the best one getting built last.

I would hope Bjarke Ingles would not scrap what Sir Norman has done. I am hoping that he would, like you said, do a remix of this tower to bring even a better rendition of what Sir Norman Foster has designed. After all, a lot of time, energy, and money have gone into Foster's proposal, and to waste that would be a shame.

I highly doubt it. Architects like to make their own mark and I think a "remix" or blending of two designs would be sacrilege in the architectural community. I believe a pastiche is frowned upon heavily in that group.

I don't think a rising up and coming architect would want to keep Fosters design or just change it. He would want to make his own mark. Designers like to do things their own way, especially those who favor radical designs like this dude.

Anyway, as I am quite a fan of unusual structures that don't look like everything else, I'm not terribly devastated by the news. Yes, the old design is exceptional, but I'm glad the new architect isn't Childs or SOM, or something very traditional and potentially dull. We may see something very iconic here that will bring the eyes of the world back to the WTC.

Of course, there is little chance we see some funky white elephant here given the significance of the sight and the oversight involved. Whatever it is, it will be most likely a conservative piece of work.

Also, I just wanted to reiterate that the core / sub-levels have already been constructed up to ground level. That's going to greatly limit the freedom Ingles has to redesign the tower. A complex ground-level transfer isn't really an option so he'll have to keep the basic shape the same. I'm hopefully optimistic to see what he comes up with.

We don't even know what Bjarke Ingels design looks like. Give him the benefit of a doubt. Sometimes change can be a good thing. .

I try to think this way too, and I appreciate your optimism, but then I look at Foster's design. It was perfect for this site and the city. I look at what Ingles has designed in the past and I can't say I'm really a huge fan, his work is unique, but not what the WTC site needs at all. I hope he'll change his ways so we don't wind up with some weird tower that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Im incredibly worried about this.... This was to be one of my favorite buildings in the world. Ingels can change what he needs to, but I would be very disappointed if the color, height, or the iconic top of the building are altered

The design is out.

There are going to be a lot of angry people.

It is 1,340 feet. I kinda like it. Maybe it's the contrarian in me.

Its alright, I mean, height wise, but it did not exceed the Foster design. But it will due I guess. At this point I just want the site to be finished and return to non-construction zone.

Edit:
Another screenshot

I agree. I like it too. The stepped blocks look quite good.

It has more skyline presence than the Foster tower, that's for sure. It's the same height but more of the bulk is at the top, so it gives the WTC complex more heft.

As to the design, assuming it's accurate, I don't know what to think. I would need to much more detailed renderings. At this point I definitely prefer the Foster design, but this could be good too depending on facade.

I hardly comment and the old design was one of my favorites in the city but this... this is just a disastrous mess. I'm so disappointed. I hope its refined and the design changes.
