I'd support this also-- as long as they aren't going to keep the main auditorium split up like it is now. The article said something about it having two viewing rooms and a 700 seat theater I think? I'm hoping they restore the main auditorium and have that be the larger theater.. with the two smaller ones in the upper floors above the lobby or something.. it can't be a movie theater like it was in the 80's, they have to restore this building!!!

I absolutely agree Orpheum, and I hope they restore the theater to it's original glory. However, If I had to chose between a restored "80's" theater, or tearing it down, I think I'd go with the "80's" double screen theater. But, I think it wouldn't bring as many movie goers though. I think people would visit the theater more often to see an independent film if it were restored, as opposed to a double screen half job.

I think we need to be very careful about this hip new buzzword "District" that we love to toss around these days. In 25 years all of these discussion boards are going to be talking about how we need to tear them all down.

I think he was talking about me using the word "District" in my Sandy comment.

I'm sorry.. I didn't mean to be rude.. I'm just in a really pissy mood tonight.. It has nothing to do with you..
I'm discouraged about a small project I'm involved with downtown, related to this idea of creating 'districts' within downtown. I still have hopes that it will happen and I don't want to burn any bridges so I'm going to stay professional for now.

Yup. Restored would be much better. I doubt that second floor in the auditorium is even up to code. They should just rip it out and restore the poor neglected gem. I still can't get over Promised Valley Playhouse.. They had the chance to restore that, or just save the facade and build a new theater, but they chose a parking garage instead. Right smack dab in the middle of where they want to put this new "arts district" AAAHGH!! It's so frustrating.

To my knowledge, the plan is to definately restore the Utah to it's original beauty and detail. I'm not sure what configuration though the theatre portion would take. As it is now, (configuration we don't like) it doesn't work for anyone.

I haven't been in the theatre since I was a little kid so it's hard for me to get an exact grasp of the layout without a more detailed draft.

Of course, we're all hoping for a restoration that gives us back the beauty of it's former stage and ceilings. No one wants just another utilitarian piece of square-footage.

$200 million-plus North Salt Lake conversion of gravel pit gets under way

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695233835,00.html

"We're always known as the city with the gravel pit and refinery entrance," she said during a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday. "This is a vision. It's something we have wanted for a long time."

Nebraska shooting comment

Architektor stated "I'm no bigger a fan of Sandy than anybody else, but comments like this go much too far."

Yes, that was a bit extreme. Sorry. Lighten up a little, though.

Just a thought,

Any of us who are familiar with this particular area of North Salt Lake understand how grotesquely ugly it has been for soooo many years. What a lift to the spirits to see this attractive mixed-use urban center with accompanying sizeable park being built. Much of the residential looks to be five stories!!!

This is very close and accessible to Downtown, and I feel it not only will dramatically improve the Northern Gateway, but create another dynamic area of synergy with our booming Downtown Core.

I like this project, and it will fill in those holes. I would rather them tear down all the refineries but still this is a good start.

We don't really need those refineries either, most of what they produce is going to Las Vegas. I say we make them built their own so they can pollute their own valley!

Just curious as to what people here think about the prospects for those refineries going away some day? I can think of a lot of higher and better uses for that land so close to downtown. But since I presume they own the land they're on, and the country actually has a shortage of refineries, I suspect they'll be there as long as any of us are alive.

What do you think?

I think that the refineries will be there for at least 50 years if not longer.

Until the country is using something other then oil for fuel we won't see a decrease in the number of needed refineries in the country.

Steven I appreciate your information regarding the Aquarium, I am sad to see it most likely heading for Sandy. Who know maybe Mayor Becker will make a ploy to get it back into the city.

I also agree with SLC Projects on the area of Sandy forming into a nice entertainment "Place" lol. If Sandy does get the Aquarium I would hope that it would go in that same area, that would seem to be the best location, and if I worked for Sandy I would want to bring it to that area of the city as well. Sandy will do a lot for itself if it can focus on building up a core area like that rather than spreading everything around.

I would prefer that the Aquarium and Theater be placed in downtown or at least within SLC, however if I had to choose one or the other I would choose to have the theater downtown.

Plans unveiled for arts and culture district

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=2292092

The Downtown Alliance unveiled its plans today for an arts and cultural district just south of the City Creek Center

Planners believe the district will be a great fit for the vision of Downtown Rising. The historic Utah Theater will see new life as a film center featuring limited release productions.

The district will feature a new 2,400 seat Performing Arts Theater that will be a primary venue for Broadway touring shows and large local performances.

Local artists will have new gallery space on Main Street.

Planners also have proposed to enhance the Capitol Theatre with an expanded lobby and new space for the Ballet West academy.

The Downtown Alliance hopes to have all of these changes completed by the time the City Creek Center opens in 2011.
