Farmington residents love their beautiful, historic town. And so does the National Register of Historic Places.
Farmington’s Main Street has been named a national historic district by the register. It will be called the "Main Street Sycamore District," according to Alysa Revell, chairwoman of the Farmington City Historic Preservation Commission that sought the national designation.
"Farmington’s historic charm is our trademark," she said. "It’s our draw. It’s what sets our city apart and makes it such a special place to live."
Because the community was settled by farmers, most of the structures along its Main Street are houses, rather than commercial buildings, Revell explained. Walking along the historic avenue, passersby can view homes from a number of historic periods, beginning in the 1870s.
"There is a lot of architectural variation," she said. "It’s definitely a unique look."
