Cottonwood Mall rendering. (Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co.)

.
I like the sound of that, but what national retailers that have the ability to expand, that aren't here or aren't going to be here soon at CCC or FP, are simply waiting on the hope that Cottonwood Mall actually happens?

Is there really a segment of retailer out there that wants to open in SLC but can't afford the CCC rents, and choose not to locate at the updated Fashion Place, or wouldn't choose Trolley Square right now or Gateway in 6 months(when they have several openings due to moves to CCC)?

The new Cottonwood was originally conceived as being an upscale shopping center, more so than City Creek.

Has anyone seen the new apartments being built at the Murray (4400 S)North Trax Station? I was driving up Main today and saw them being built. They are west of the trax and there looks to be about 4-5 buildings. That will ad some great density to that station and maybe kick start the Fireclay retail a little bit, and the overall fireclay development in the long run. I took a picture with my phone but my flickr is acting weird to I'll post it when I get in on flickr.

But did you see the FANTASTIC NEW BRIDGE??? It still bugs me that that's the best rendering of those apartments...

Farmington’s Main Street named a national historic district

The avenue reflects architecture from various periods

Farmington residents love their beautiful, historic town. And so does the National Register of Historic Places.

Farmington’s Main Street has been named a national historic district by the register. It will be called the "Main Street Sycamore District," according to Alysa Revell, chairwoman of the Farmington City Historic Preservation Commission that sought the national designation.

"Farmington’s historic charm is our trademark," she said. "It’s our draw. It’s what sets our city apart and makes it such a special place to live."

Because the community was settled by farmers, most of the structures along its Main Street are houses, rather than commercial buildings, Revell explained. Walking along the historic avenue, passersby can view homes from a number of historic periods, beginning in the 1870s.

"There is a lot of architectural variation," she said. "It’s definitely a unique look."

More to the article, including a few pics, via the link. It's nice seeing some historic preservation in some smaller towns--good for F-ton!

Utah Museum of Natural History

While I was in town visiting the family, I took my nephews and nieces to the museum. Very cool. Allow for plenty of time to spend, because there is a lot to see.

The first photo is really dark, but you can see how the museum really fits into the landscape.

Some minor projects in my sector of the valley. I really do like this building though; Millcreek Community Center & Library @ 3500 S off 2300 E:

(looking east, if that's not obvious)

(looking south on the east side of the building)

(looking west)

This isn't a good photo because I was looking in the light, but the copper is bright green (like lime) on this side:

huge curtain wall faces the street:

Olympus High (my!) School:

I was stunned nothing was damaged here during the wind storm last month. The CMU wall was standing on its own, as tall as it is now, with no reinforcement.

IHC Holladay Clinic @ 6300 S Highland Drive/2000 E. I just noticed this the other day, and don't know anything about it except what I saw on the sign. I'm really glad something is going there though. It's pretty big, the lot is huge and has been empty for a long time, and I hate this area of Highland Drive.

Nice finds! I really like that community center. IMO, one of the best designs to be built in the SLC area in the last few years!

I love the way the proposed Cottonwood Mall looks. Very European. I really hope it works, I have my doubts though.

The developer is millwood management. The complex is called fireclay affordable apartments. Phase 1 is getting close to finishing. Phase 2 is adding 10 more buildings and getting ready to start. The same company owns the apartments that you can see south of 4500 south. The land to the north is owned by another developer and has plans for high density condo's. Should be a nice dense area upon completion.

This site has stuff above ground now; I'm too clueless to know what it is, but there's more than a story of concrete and rebar going up. It's above ground, to the (very) uninformed eye, looks like elevator shafts.

No pics. I'm lazy like that.

Day Break is the best example of surbarban planning. It is really starting to be more and more self sufficient, and with traxx running through (the future) heart of it, it is a great model for responsible development.

Looks like crews are about ready to bulldoze the backside of valley fair mall to make way for the new megaplex theater.

Are they taking down the former Mervyn's to do so? For some reason I just assumed they were remodeling it, but from the ground up makes much more sense.
